Our greatest asset has been and will continue to be our people.  We are looking for an experienced and motivated individual to fill the position of Learning Designer within our IT Digital Talent Development team based in Houston, Texas.

 

The IT Technical Talent Development Expert’s main responsibilities are to create and support Oxy’s IT employee’s technical career path, learning, and development initiatives, including supporting employees to stay current in their role with new technologies. This person will design and develop custom learning programs for the IT department by collaborating with colleagues, leveraging internal resources, collaborating with various IT teams, and internal and external learning development teams in other areas of Occidental Petroleum.

Day to day responsibilities include:

  • Create Technical Career Paths for IT Organization

Develop clear and structured career paths that provide progression opportunities for IT professionals of all levels.  You will work with IT leaders to evaluate the current skill sets of the IT organization and identify potential roles and responsibilities that align with organizational goals and rapidly developing technological needs.

  • Work with IT Technical Leaders to stay immersed in current technology

You will engage with IT leaders and vendors to discuss the latest technological solutions relevant to the oil and gas industry, ensuring the IT department’s technological training and development strategies are aligned with cutting-edge innovations.

  • Collaborate with SMEs: You’ll work closely with IT Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to design and develop instructional materials. These materials include tutorials, job aids, reference guides, audio and video scripts, knowledge checks, and instructor guides. Your goal is to transform complex technical information into professionally written, interactive instruction for IT learners.
  • Support Learning Plan Development: You’ll take charge of advancing and improving IT technical learning solutions and skills frameworks. By creating effective learning plans, you’ll ensure that IT employees acquire the necessary knowledge and expertise.
  • Stay Current: To stay ahead, you’ll research IT learning and development trends. This involves internal and external benchmarking, active participation in professional associations, and keeping an eye on current IT industry trends. Your insights will help recommend how to incorporate new trends into existing and future IT learning solutions.
  • Customized Learning Solutions: You’ll conduct thorough needs assessments to identify specific IT technical learning needs within the organization. Based on these assessments, you’ll tailor customized IT learning solutions and identify opportunities for enhancement.
  • Create Engaging Experiences: Your creativity comes into play as you design user experiences that educate, inform, and ignite passion for new technologies. Whether through gamification, video, animation, web pages, print design, or PowerPoint, your goal is to make IT learning engaging and effective.
  • Effective Communication: You’ll play a pivotal role in the internal and external communication of IT initiatives. Transparency is key, and you’ll radiate information about IT technical learning programs and opportunities.
  • Guidelines and Templates: As part of your role, you’ll develop and maintain guidelines and templates for IT learning products. These resources will streamline the creation of consistent and effective IT technical training materials.
  • Technical Mentoring Program Facilitation: Coordinate technical mentorship opportunities where experienced IT professionals can guide less experienced staff, ensuring technical knowledge transfer and professional growth.
  • Support IT Workforce Development: You’ll play a key role in executing the IT Workforce Development strategy, delivering technical solutions that enhance the IT employee’s career management and improve the employee experience.
  • Track IT Skills Development: You’ll manage IT skills maps and learning plans within the learning management system. By doing so, you’ll ensure that employees have the necessary IT technical skills and knowledge to excel in their roles.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree Instructional Design, Organizational Management, Industrial-Organizational Psychology, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working directly with leaders and employees in a corporate environment.
  • Experience working within IT, oil and gas industry, or other technical industries.
  • Experience in creating skills-based learning plans.
  • Proven track record of designing engaging and effective learning experiences that align with adult learning principles, such as ADDIE, etc.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to handle multiple initiatives simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to connect with diverse audiences, including all levels of leadership.
  • Experience with LMS and e-Learning authoring software required such as Articulate Storyline 360, Camtasia, Vyond, Adobe Premier Pro, Adobe Illustrator (or equivalent development tools.)
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to use data to drive decision making, and measure program effectiveness.
  • Experience with collaborations tools such as SharePoint, Teams, Slack, etc.
  • Expertise in MS PowerPoint, Word, Excel.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or additional certifications in adult learning or instructional design.
  • Experience with AWS.
  • Experience creating and delivering professional level presentations.
  • In-depth knowledge of adult learning theories, including andragogy, self-directed learning, and experiential learning.
  • Knowledge of survey creation (MS Forms).
  • Able to develop KPI’s to prove effectiveness of technical training.
