National Park Service Seasonal Maintenance Mechanic in Hot Springs, Arkansas
Summary This position is located in a National Park Service Unit. The primary purpose of the position is to perform building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties. Incumbent utilizes journeyman knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts. Responsibilities Performs all aspects of the carpentry, plumbing, masonry, and painting trades at journeymen level. Repairs and maintains historic buildings, government housing, support structures and buildings within accepted safety, health and sanitary conditions. Performs plumbing on potable water and wastewater systems and related equipment such floats, fittings, sinks, toilets, and fixtures. Performs electrical wiring necessary to maintain existing 120 and 240 volt electrical systems and troubleshoots and repairs to 24 and 48 volt Photovoltaic power systems. Plans and lay out projects, making modifications when necessary. Inputs data into the computerized Facility Management Software System (FMSS) and uses electronic email and word processing programs as a component of daily work activities. The park is not only well known for its thermal springs and related bathing activities, but also for its mountain lands and over 26 miles of mountain trails. Hot Springs National Park is also recognized as a significant historical resource and representative of an important stage in the development of the American conservation movement. Bathhouse Row, a national historic landmark district, showcases one of the few collections of historic bathhouses remaining in the United States. The park contains over 5500 acres. Little Rock, a major metropolitan area, is approximately 50 miles to the northeast. Memphis, TN is 3 hours from the park and Dallas, TX is approximately 5 hours away. The county hosts six K-12 school districts with 2 being in the city of Hot Springs. Housing is readily available and affordable. Provide technical recommendations for methods, tools, and materials used in these trades as well as plan, layout all work to be completed and ensure proper selection of materials and manpower for the completion of projects. Performed at this level in two of the following trades: Carpentry, Plumbing, Painting, Masonry, Water Treatment Plant Operations, or Roofing. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS). Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding.
