Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawaii Marine Center (UHMC), located at Pier 35 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY: $12,254.64/Mon.

DUTIES: Acts as the senior engineering officer and the Masters principal assistant in all matters pertaining to engineering and administration of the Engineering Department. This is a sea-going ships crew position. The employee will be assigned to the vessel operated by UHMC, R/V KILO MOANA. The Chief Engineer, R/V Kilo Moana is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the vessels main engines, electrical generating equipment, and all other various mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic equipment, and hotel services which are a part of the ships system. Detects and recognizes symptoms of impending malfunction or failure of ships systems and take positive action to restore normal operations. Provides a daily report to the Master stating the fuel, water, lube oil, and potable water consumed in the previous twenty-four (24) hour period and total currently on hand. Manages, maintains and submits required reports for Engineering Department, documentation and equipment logs. Maintains an accurate inventory of spare parts and supplies in coordination with Port Engineer and Purchasing Agent. Recommends rotation schedules for the Engineering Department personnel in coordination with the Master and Port Operations Manager.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Associates Degree from an accredited community college or maritime academy in a Marine Engineering field. (At least four (4) years of professional experience in a seagoing marine engineering position with a valid merchant marine credential (MMC) may substitute for an Associates Degree.).

EXPERIENCE

At least two (2) years of service as a licensed First Assistant Engineer on a seagoing vessel. Must have at least two (2) years experience supervising paid staff and attendance in supervisory training programs.

KNOWLEDGE

In-depth knowledge of shipboard diesel, electrical, hydraulic, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), and electronic control systems maintenance and operations. Working knowledge of USCG rules and regulations, ISM, ABS requirements, vessel stability, current maritime laws and treaties including but not limited to 33 CFR, 46 CFR, Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW), MARPOL, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.

ABILITIES and SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret ship systems blueprints and technical documentation. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Proficient in use of personal computer applications (i.e. email, internet, Microsoft Office Suite, AMOS, or similar software). Must possess a valid U.S. Passport. Must possess current MMC and required STCW documentation of training and validity for licenses described below. Must possess Chief Engineer Unlimited, with oceans endorsement, a valid USCG medical certificate, and a valid Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC). Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to pass USCG physical for merchant mariners. Must be physically able to move about our vessels - climb ladders and e ter voids, tanks, and tight spaces. Medical and physical fitness must be adequate for working continuously at sea for two to three (2-3) months. Able to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted.
