Regular, Full-Time, Limited-Term (not to exceed three (3) years in duration), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Planetology (HIGP), located in Honolulu, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $5,800 - $8,300/Mon.

DUTIES: Designs, develops, and operates cable observatories in SOEST including the Kilo Nalu Observatory (KNO) in Kakaako and the ALOHA Cabled Observatory (ACO) at Station ALOHA in the North Pacific. This includes working with both hardware (oceanographic instruments), software and engineering support that enables data acquisition from instruments, development of drivers, and networking of instruments and data systems. Maintains complete documentation of all work done, including documentation of software, tasks, and procedures. Develops and maintains project website services integrated with scientific databases. Develops and implements tools, including web-based data management services, to provide access to dynamic research datasets and content. Maintains and updates, as necessary, data access services that allow users to seamlessly access data in near real-time. Plans, coordinates, and participates in sea going cruises to deploy and recover instruments. Drives to project locations, to transport location as necessary. Maintains and updates project websites and Wikis and improves their appearance and accessibility. Works with Principal Investigator (PI) on data analysis (including QA/QC), report writing, and interpretation of results. Contributes as necessary to original writings and graphics to data reports and other publications. Manages, maintains, and archives all KNO and ACO data sets. Troubleshoots computer and software issues as needed. With PI and the SOEST Research Computing Facility (RCF), implements security and safe practices for computers and servers. Works with PI and RCF to manage computer system and data disaster recovery as necessary.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Bachelors Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Computer Science or a related field.

EXPERIENCE

Four to six (4-6) years of experience with the setup, deployment, and operation of oceanographic equipment, including current meters, temperature/salinity/pressure sensors, acoustic hydrophone and cameras. Demonstrated experience processing, plotting, and analyzing data. Experience implementing complex algorithms in Matlab, Python, or equivalent algorithmic language. Includes one to two (1-2) years of experience with network monitoring and management, including maintenance and trouble-shooting network outages, firewall maintenance, and wireless and wired protocols.

KNOWLEDGE

Working knowledge of Linux system administration and common scripting languages such as Python, Matlab, or equivalent. Demonstrated knowledge of Windows operating systems on personal computers. Computer networking knowledge. Knowledge of computer security protocols and best practices.

ABILITIES and SKILLS

Demonstrated ability to understand electrical systems and high pressure (underwater) environmental constraints. Ability to troubleshoot various sensors in the lab and during at-sea deployments. Must be able to interact efficiently with others. Must possess a valid drivers license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver insurance equivalent to Hawaiis No-Fault Drivers Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete the UH Title IX training within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds. Able to work off vessels at sea, sometimes in extreme sea states. Must adhere to safe working practices.
