Cornell Cooperative Extension EFNEP Nutrition Educator in Herkimer, New York

The EFNEP Nutrition Educator delivers public education for Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Herkimer County to improve healthy food and lifestyle choices among limited resource families and individuals encompassing all age groups in various locations throughout Oneida County.

This includes presenting a series of 8 to 10 lessons that focus on general nutrition, food preparation, food safety and food budgeting. Nutrition education may take place at local organizations or in participant homes virtually via Zoom, phone or in person. Recruitment of participants is also included as part of the workday. The individual will collect and manage participant data ensuring confidentiality at all times.

This is a grant-funded position. Funding for the program is through the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) as part of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), an agency within the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Required Qualifications: -Associate degree or equivalent. High School Diploma/GED and one year transferrable program/functional experience can substitute for associate degree. -One year volunteer or work related experience. -Proficiency with Windows-based software (including PowerPoint) and experience with various social media platforms (including Facebook) and working knowledge of Zoom. -Ability to regularly move/transport supplies and equipment. -Ability to clearly communicate and to read and write in English. -Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position. -Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications: -Nutrition-related knowledge/experience/background. -Must be comfortable purchasing and preparing foods and reviewing and following recipes. -Experience in adult and youth education or other relevant work experience. -Familiarity with the community in which the work will take place. -Experience working with the target audience (limited resource). -Ability to present effective and relevant educational lessons to target audiences (one-on-one and goup) and work with diverse audiences of all ages. -Ability and willingness to work with diverse audiences and maintain cultural sensitivity. Good judgment and problem solving skills and ability to keep information confidential. -Ability to plan and organize personal work responsibilities according to priorities developed with the immediate supervisor. -Ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of a team.
