Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Business Process Re-Engineering Architect in Helena, Montana

Overview

The Computing and Information Technology Directorate works to re-imagine how digital technologies can simplify the research experience, enable data-driven insights for decision makers, and accelerate PNNL’s research missions. CIT helps connect staff to systems while enabling a broader research computing ecosystem to improve productivity and provide a sense of community.

We are seeking a Business Process Re-Engineering (BPR) Architect to drive the evolution of process improvement across the laboratory. This role is central to building and sustaining a consistent, lab-wide capability in business process re-engineering—one that directly supports operational excellence and mission delivery.

We are looking for someone who understands how the business of science works, has experience leading cross-functional process redesign efforts, and knows how to identify inefficiencies, reduce waste, and unlock value through structured process improvements. You will champion the use of PNNL’s newly developed BPR playbook and tools, coaching and enabling others while also leading enterprise-level efforts that drive measurable outcomes.

If you're energized by improving how work gets done—and you thrive in environments where culture, leadership, and operations intersect—this is your opportunity to make a lasting impact.

Responsibilities

The BPR Lead will:

  • Establish and evolve a lab-wide BPR capability grounded in a shared methodology, tools, and consistent practices aligned with the PNNL BPR Playbook.

  • Lead major process improvement efforts in partnership with process owners, using data-informed insights and human-centered approaches to streamline, simplify, and modernize lab operations.

  • Facilitate value stream mapping, waste identification, and process optimization —not for technology’s sake, but to enable smarter investments, better performance, and higher staff engagement.

  • Coach leaders and teams on how to adopt and apply BPR practices within their own work areas, building long-term capability and cultural alignment with continuous improvement principles.

  • Collaborate across disciplines , including change management, user experience, and Business Analysts and Process Owners, to ensure redesign efforts are sustainable, inclusive, and embedded in how the lab works.

What Success Looks Like

  • A visible, consistent, and lab-wide approach to process re-engineering is adopted and supported by leadership.

  • Business process improvements are driven by data, co-designed with stakeholders, and deliver measurable value.

  • Teams are equipped and empowered to identify, analyze, and lead their own improvement efforts with confidence.

  • BPR becomes a core part of how the lab plans, prioritizes, and implements change.

  • BPR practices are successfully leveraged to transform processes in support of our ERP program, enabling modernized operations and enterprise-wide alignment.

Who You Are

You are a collaborative and strategic leader with a passion for improving how organizations operate. You know how to bring structure to ambiguity, inspire people to adopt new ways of working, and translate vision into action. You bring curiosity, empathy, and rigor to every project, and you understand that meaningful transformation is about people and process—not just systems.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 11 years of relevant experience -OR-

  • MS/MA or higher and 9 years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven leadership of cross-functional business process improvement or transformation initiatives, particularly in complex or matrixed organizations

  • Demonstrated ability to build trust and credibility with stakeholders at all levels
