The UnitedHealth Group (UHG) Privacy Office is hiring an Associate General Counsel to help support its mission to make the health system work better for everyone. This position focuses heavily on being an expert with the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules, state data privacy protection laws, and implementation of new federal and state privacy laws. This position is dedicated to supporting UnitedHealthcare’s health plan and ancillary businesses

The successful candidate must have a health information privacy legal background and experience working with HIPAA and state privacy laws. This position will report to the Privacy Senior Associate General Counsel supporting UnitedHealthcare

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Privacy Senior Associate General Counsel supporting UnitedHealthcare and other privacy professional colleagues on a wide variety of privacy legal risk projects

  • Provide strategic privacy legal guidance and risk mitigation strategies to business leaders and cross-functional teams

  • Work closely and collaborate with business, legal, compliance and regulatory affairs colleagues across UnitedHealthcare to ensure regulatory and contractual obligations are met

  • Counsel and guide internal stakeholders on the development and implementation of policies, procedures, structures and processes to meet regulatory and contractual requirements

  • Assist in responding to inquiries from state and federal regulators, customers, policy makers, and other external stakeholders

  • Ensure new or amended privacy and security laws are reviewed for applicability and timely implemented

  • Develop and lead training and education on privacy and data security related topics

  • Establish and maintain key relationships with a variety of legal, compliance and regulatory affairs experts across all areas of UnitedHealthcare

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate degree

  • Current license to practice law in state of residence

  • Knowledge of and experience with federal/state privacy and security data protection laws and regulations (e.g., HIPAA/HITECH, GLBA, 42 CFR Part 2, various state laws)

  • 5+ years of experience practicing law, preferably in a large corporation, law firm or government agency

  • 3+ years of experience in a privacy legal environment

  • Knowledge of and experience with federal/state privacy and security data protection laws and regulations (e.g., HIPAA/HITECH, GLBA, 42 CFR Part 2, various state laws)

  • Proven track record of managing multiple projects simultaneously

  • Ability to make sound decisions regarding complex healthcare, legal, regulatory and corporate matters

  • Exceptional:

  • factual and legal research skills

  • written, verbal and presentation skills

  • analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills

  • Self-starter and ability to work independently on complex matters with little supervision

  • Solid interpersonal skills and the ability to create and maintain positive working relationships within a large and complex corporate environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Privacy certification such as Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP)

  • Health plan privacy experience

The salary range for this role is $124,500 to $239,400 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with al minimum wage laws as applicable.
