Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Masters Intern - DevOps Engineer in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

Overview

The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security.

The ideal candidate should have experience in modern Linux systems and strong interest in virtualization, containers, container orchestration, and automation of such tools. The candidate will work on projects that deploy services into Kubernetes, including web services, data processing, and support systems. The candidate is expected to work in the Computing and Data Operations group, and assist in operating the systems to support scientific research at the EMSL user facility.

Responsibilities

  • Deploy services into Kubernetes, including web services, data processing, and support systems.

  • Assist in operating systems that support scientific research at the EMSL user facility.

  • Collaborate with the Computing and Data Operations group to enhance system performance and reliability.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues as they arise.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be matriculated/enrolled in a Master's program at an accredited college or university.

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current master's student enrolled at an accredited college or university.

  • Experience working in a Linux command line environment, such as CentOS, Rocky, or Ubuntu.

  • Proficiency in Python3 and Bash programming.

  • Knowledge of container technologies like Docker, Kubernetes, and Podman.

  • Basic knowledge of web technologies such as Apache, Nginx, JSON, REST, and HTTP.

  • Understanding of NoSQL databases such as MongoDB.

  • Familiarity with SQL databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.

  • Working knowledge of GIT version control, including CI/CD pipelines.

  • Basic understanding of TCP/IP networking.

  • Demonstrated troubleshooting and creative problem-solving abilities.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.

  • Self-directed with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Previous experience in virtualization, container orchestration, and automation tools.

  • Experience deploying and managing services in Kubernetes environments.

  • Understanding of scientific computing environments and their unique requirements.

  • Knowledge of HPC (High-Performance Computing) environments.

  • Familiarity with DOE missions and challenges related to molecular-to-mesoscale studies.

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements

In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, new employees are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

For foreign national candidates:

If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO)risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
