Purpose:

Works with and oversees members of the Police and Security Team to ensure a safe and secure environment for patients, families, visitors, and employees at the hospital facility. Responsible for the protection of all hospital property as well as for patient property entrusted to the department. Directs personnel involved in establishing, promoting, and maintaining hospital security and property protection programs by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors. Maintains performance improvement activities within the departments and assures competency of all personnel. Maintains efficient and effective department operation while requiring compliance with all JCAHO, state, federal and local regulatory laws, standards, and protocols.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintains compliance with all laws.

  • Monitors and maintains department budget and provides input for changes.

  • Interacts with department heads, supervisors, and employees.

  • Performs security assessments and makes recommendations.

  • Provides analysis and reporting, and makes recommendations regarding operational changes.

  • Maintains effective working relationships with local agencies.

  • Audits and evaluates programs.

  • Conducts performance evaluations, provides coaching, and ensures training of staff.

  • Directly supervises staff, conducts employment interviews, and makes hiring recommendations.

  • Assists in developing operational and staffing plans.

  • At least 7 years law-enforcement or security experience with at least three years in a leadership capacity OR

  • Act 120 trained or equivalent (PA State Police Act Police Academy training, Police Officer training as mandated by the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers) with 3 years of experience in law enforcement or a security related field.

  • Progressive leadership experience preferred.

  • Background in law enforcement services or security in health care or in a service-oriented industry preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of common technical applications, such as Microsoft Office products, preferred.

  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills, especially the ability to effectively interact, communicate, and diffuse potential combative situations with persons from all walks of life.

  • Psychological fitness required to deal with stress and potentially dangerous conflict situations.

  • Physical fitness requirements to deal with typical physical demands that require full body motion and physical strength and stamina sufficient to respond to crisis interventions and medical emergencies.

  • Must have good hand/eye coordination and be able to pass an eye and hearing test with appropriate correction.

  • Must be able to perform as a security officer when necessary.

  • Act 120 trained or equivalent (PA State Police Act Police Academy training, Police Officer training as mandated by the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers) preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Act 235 - All state mandated paperwork submitted within 6 months of hire or placement and process completed within 9 months of hire or placement.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • Driver's License

  • UPMC Physical Fitness Standard

  • Act 235 with Firearms with renewal

  • Act 235 without Firearms with renewal

  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal

  • Act 33 with renewal

  • Act 34 with renewal

  • Act 501

  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
