City of Grand Rapids Civil Engineer I in Grand Rapids, Michigan

Nature of Work

The purpose of this job is to perform field inspection of public projects in construction.  Performs design engineering calculations in support of construction plans and specifications.  Performs AutoCAD at a proficient level to prepare complete and accurate construction plans.  Maintain project documentation for record keeping purposes on municipal engineering projects.  Calculates and prepares pay estimates for contractor payment.  Completes as-built process for project record retention.

  • Supervises and participates in the inspection of engineering construction projects; coordinates the work of contractors; ensures conformance with plans and specifications 
  • Performs drafting using AutoCAD 3-D road/utility construction plans, field survey information and as-built drawings    
  • Prepares estimates for labor and material costs; develops complete final design package for bidding    
  • Creates daily reports and other required documentation    
  • Performs project and permit inspection; conducts various permit reviews    
  • Runs profiles and cross sections; procures field data necessary for preparation of plans; establishes line and grade for construction work    
  • Performs related work as required

Minimum Training and Experience

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering

--OR--

  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities

Licenses or Certifications

  • Certified Construction Storm Water Operator or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • Soil Erosion and Sediment Control Plan Review and Design Certification or ability to obtain within six months of hire. 
  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver's License
