Job Description

The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic software developer who wants to make a difference in the world by reducing the number of cars on the road, increasing the use of electric vehicles, or enabling an array of nonpetroleum-based fuels.

This position will support websites in our portfolio such as the Alternative Fuels Data Center (https://afdc.energy.gov), Clean Cities and Communities (https://cleancities.energy.gov), the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation (https://driveelectric.gov), and the NREL Developer Network (https://developer.nrel.gov).

The selected candidate will help us innovate new applications and maintain existing assets with a focus on software as a service (SaaS). Our team is passionate about both web and energy technologies, so the candidate must be comfortable not only programming but also participating in software development processes that involve meeting with clients and end users.

The preferred candidate will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Configure platforms to meet user needs and accomplish client goals, which requires understanding software documentation, approaching problems creatively, and communicating effectively with vendors

  • Tailor third-party software platforms to deliver user interfaces with custom branding and unique functionality using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript

  • Collaborate with software developers, engineers, scientists, analysts, project leads, and clients to translate software requirements into tangible solutions within the confines of existing software platforms

  • Analyze website traffic to support data-driven decisions for software development based on the way people use web applications and client goals

  • Support content creators and site administrators by providing technical expertise and being approachable and willing to provide or research answers to questions from multiple source.

  • Be adaptable and able to work on multiple projects simultaneously

IT Professional III - works independently to design, develop, implement and provide a variety of capabilities to the required systems or projects and has complete understanding and experience with wide application of principles, concepts and techniques in web programming and software development.

IT Professional II - works under general supervision with mentorship and oversight from senior members of the team to facilitate scopes of work.Candidates at Level II should possess some of the preferred qualifications with limited proficiency. Those at Level III should cover more of these qualifications and bring a deeper level of knowledge and skill.

Basic Qualifications

For IT Professional III

Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD or equivalent relevant education/experience. Equivalent relevant experience may be substituted for education.

For IT Professional II -

Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree or equivalent relevant education/experience. Equivalent relevant experience may be substituted for education.

Note: Candidate may have associates degree, high school degree, or certificate in lieu of degree + years of required experience.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Previous configuration of software solutions

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will demonstrate experience working with software-as-a-service platforms or proprietary software solutions, such as:

  • Community discussion forums (e.g., Discourse) – providing a space for people to collaborate, share information, and have topic-based conversations in threads

  • Learning management systems (e.g., Litmos) – delivering educational content for online learning

  • Ticketing and project managements tools (e.g., DoneDone, GitHub Projects, Pivotal Tracker, and Harvest) – connecting website users with support teams and providing tools to organize projects

  • Email marketing platforms (e.g., Mailchimp, GovDelivery, and Lyris) – delivering content to subscribers through email campaigns

  • Web analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics and Crazy Egg) – tracking website stats and providing information to make data-driven decisions for software development

The preferred candidate would also have experience and interests related to the SaaS implementation landscape including software development, data management, analysis, or project management.

Candidates at Level II should possess some of the preferred qualifications with limited proficiency. Those at Level III should cover more of these qualifications and bring a deeper level of knowledge and skill.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: IT Professional III / Annual Salary Range: $79,600 - $143,300

Job Profile: IT Professional II / Annual Salary Range: $73,200 - $120,800

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.

Benefits Summary

Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance; short- and long-term disability insurance; pension benefits; 403(b) Employee Savings Plan with employer match; life and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance; personal time off (PTO) and sick leave; paid holidays; and tuition reimbursement. NREL employees may be eligible for, but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement- based awards that include a monetary component. Some positions may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement. Limited-term positions are not eligible for long-term disability or tuition reimbursement.
