Job Description

NREL’s Communications Office has an opening in the Energy Security and Systems Section for an experienced communications project manager who will lead the Energy Security and ARIES portfolio.

In this role, you will be accountable for leading the Energy Security and ARIES communications portfolio by motivating and guiding delivery of five-star customer service through establishing relationships and trust with senior-level clients at NREL and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). This position serves as the primary communications point of contact for Energy Security and Resilience, Cybersecurity and ARIES leadership and staff at NREL and the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER). This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance.

This position may be a great match if:

  • You are flexible, adaptable, and thrive in fast-paced, ever-changing environments.

  • You enjoy planning for the long-term, while producing near-term results—consulting with clients on big-picture goals and shifting solutions as needed.

  • You consider yourself a continuous learner, always eager to explore new technologies and techniques for improving outcomes.

  • You delight in dissecting complex and often technical information and making it adaptable to multiple audiences.

  • You have extraordinary people skills and are known for devising creative solutions and maintaining diplomacy and professionalism during times of stress.

  • You inspire stellar work through exemplary attention to detail and quality, knowledge of traditional and digital communication standards and best practices.

  • You have a passion for problem-solving.

  • You enjoy coaching others to accomplish client goals and help build effective collaboration.

  • You are an expert at tracking ad hoc client requests back to an established plan, system, or process.

Successful candidates will be able to manage multiple projects concurrently with minimal supervision—to help unify projects across contributors and measure overall results against established goals. We’re looking for a self-motivated leader with remarkable organizational skills who is comfortable with quick-turn requests, and has experience with strategic communications planning and execution.

Your success will depend on your adaptability, flexibility, and willingness to learn; ability to inspire and lead through influence; can-do attitude and collaborative work style; and the ability to react positively to rapidly changing circumstances.

Job functions include:

  • Serve as the primary NREL communications contact for the Energy Security and Resilience, Cybersecurity and ARIES communications portfolios, DOE program managers, NREL center directors, CESER lab program manager, plus other labs and partners.

  • Work with line manager to support ARIES Project Lead as part of the Energy Security and ARIES communications portfolio.

  • Build deep knowledge of, and influence with, key clients; maintain and grow trusting relationships through regular meetings and reporting and proactive communications project oversight.

  • Plan, develop, and manage multiple strategic communications projects simultaneously. Ensure robust agreements, establish resources, and track budgets, timelines, and deliverables. Take a hands-on approach to ensure that deliverables meet objectives in line with agreements.

  • Lead communications colleagues in NREL’s matrix management environment (employees work across functions and project lines) to achieve client goals. This includes staff tasked with account or project leadership and coordination, writing, editing, digital content creation, plus department web, design, and multimedia specialists.

  • Distribute portfolio work across staff and review work for completeness and quality. Provide feedback and project/task-specific coaching.

  • In partnership with line manager, identify and assign critical resources for projects and individual tasks, and help ensure resource availability to complete deliverables.

  • Provide expertise on communication principles and strategically aligning content (e.g., articles, fact sheets, graphics, newsletters, presentations, publications, web content, webinars, and videos).

  • Support line manager by training new staff on client relationships and projects, best practices, processes, and technologies.

  • Manage project and client budgets by assigning tasks and monitoring spending.
