Medical Laboratory Scientist (MT)

A Brief Overview

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MT) performs chemical, histochemical, or morphological analysis on specimens using laboratory instrumentation and microscopes using Tidelands Health Lab approved policies and procedures. The MT insures quality of results and determines validity of reportable results. The Medical Laboratory Scientist Acts as a resource person for physicians in laboratory testing.

What you will do

  • Collects, processes, and handles blood and/or other biological specimens according to established procedures; instructs patients in the proper collection of samples

  • Performs a variety of clinical laboratory tests in the areas of hematology, microbiology, immunology, clinical chemistry, and urinalysis, as assigned; conducts quantitative and qualitative chemical analysis of body fluids such as blood, urine, and spinal fluid; performs blood counts using microscope

  • Conducts blood tests for transfusion purposes; may draw blood from patient's finger, ear lobe, or vein observing principles of sepsis to obtain blood samples

  • Develops and maintains cell/tissue cultures for testing purposes, as appropriate; isolates and identifies specimens, using advanced laboratory techniques

  • Performs quality control on test results, ensuring validity and accuracy

  • Performs calibration and troubleshooting on testing systems and instruments to ensure adherence to established standards of accuracy

  • Keeps records and reports on results according to established procedures

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or other Science, plus a minimum of 12 months in an accredited MT program Required

Experience Qualifications

  • One year of experience in a hospital setting Preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • High emotional intelligence with critical thinking ability

Licenses and Certifications

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist - American Medical Technologist (If not certified at time of hire, certification must be obtained within one year) Required

Light-Medium Physical Agility Test (PAT) Rating
