Indian Health Service Podiatrist - DE in Gallup, New Mexico

Summary The primary purpose of this position is to provide specialty and full range of diagnostic, preventative and therapeutic podiatric services including surgery to patients with diabetes and to provide podiatric consultative service within the Gallup Service Unit. Responsibilities This position is being announced concurrently under Merit Promotion/Excepted Service Examining procedures. Provides comprehensive assessment of the lower extremity from distal to the knee; evaluate and treat persons with diabetes to identify individuals at high risk for lower extremity amputations; provides both neurological testing on feet. Assesses footwear needs in diabetics, and clients with non-diabetes related foot problems such as plantar fasciitis, pescavus/arthritis, other congenital or traumatic foot deformities, and gait abnormalities. Prevent lower limb amputations and actively participate in limb preservation by aggressively treating lower extremity infections, both surgically and medically. Performs major and minor surgeries on out-patients and in-patients and manage their care and plan of treatment for all Podiatric related issues. Assists in selection and scheduling patients for Foot Care Clinics; and investigates implementation of care management program for tracking and providing services to clients. Develops and implements systems to evaluate treatment and program effectiveness and implements continuous performance improvement programs and reviews for the Foot Care Program POSITION IS OPEN UNTIL FILLED - the vacancy will close when a selection is made. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Education: Applicants must have a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degree from a school of podiatric medicine accredited by the American Podiatric Medical Association's Council on Podiatric Medical Education (APMA) at the time the degree was obtained. Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners (NBPME) or the American Podiatric Medical Licensing Examination (APMLE). In addition, a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice podiatric medicine in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Experience: In addition to meeting the above education and licensure requirements, applicants must have one or more full years of experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, in the practice of podiatry in an office, clinic, or hospital. Qualifying experience may include: Diagnosis and treatment of foot, ankle, and lower leg problems; Setting fractures, prescribing physical therapy or drugs, or performing surgery on feet, ankles, or legs; Treatment of Achilles tendinitis, ganglia of the feet, diabetic neuropathy, foot ulcers, gout, rheumatoid arthritis; stress fractures, or bacterial, viral, and fungal infections; and/or Other experience necessary to perform the duties of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-15: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of professional podiatry experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Performing reconstructive surgery, open fracture reduction and internal fixation and surgical debridement of the foot and ankle, and skill to fabricate, modify, prescribe, fit, and evaluate lower extremity orthotic devices, casts and splints. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: Candidate must have successfully completed an advanced residency program in Foot and Ankle Surgery or Podiatric Medicine and Surgical Residency (PMSR, PM&S-36, PMSR/RRA) OR currently be enrolled in a one year fellowship residency program for advanced training in Foot and Ankle Surgery to be completed within 3 to 6 months.
