Job Description:
This position is a full-time OPS, Core Research Facility in the Proteomics and Mass Spectrometry Core in the Interdisciplinary Center for Biotechnology Research (ICBR) at the University of Florida and reports to the Proteomics Core Scientific Director. The ICBR Proteomics core offers comprehensive molecular analytical services to support life science research on campus. The incumbent will work independently to perform MS-based methodologies. Specific duties include the use of mass spectrometry for the analysis of peptides, proteins, and metabolites in biological specimens. This individual must be familiar with HPLC, mass spectrometry technologies, and analytical chemistry techniques. The enthusiastic scientist joins our team for an exciting research opportunity in the field of microbiome science as well. This position offers hands-on experience in cutting-edge research techniques and the chance to contribute to groundbreaking studies on the human microbiome. Commitment to working effectively in a team environment, attention to detail, and adherence to following strict standard operating procedures are a must. Additional duties include contribution to the development, optimization, and validation of new methodologies that may lead to new service offerings.
Laboratory Techniques: The scientist will prepare plates containing microbiome standards (QC) and generate four distinct matrices each week for quality control purposes. These matrices will be loaded onto plates for data collection, supporting the development of a unique microbiome library at the University of Florida.
Bioinformatics and Data Science: The scientist will assist with statistical analysis using R and help organize datasets for interpretation. A key focus will be integrating microbiome and metabolome data through statistical and machine-learning approaches to uncover meaningful biological insights.
Assist PM Scientific Director in consultation service with customers on best practices for sample collection, processing, and analysis. Perform independent data analysis via database searches on raw MS data and deliver data and consult with customers to explain the analytical results to the customers.
Review protein sample QC and assist routine customer projects with in-gel and in-solution protein digestion, precipitated protein and tissue processing, protein identification, and label-free proteomics by MS using the LC-MS/MS (timsTOF flex, Orbitrap Fusion, and QE Plus) instrumentation.
Create SOWs before accepting and processing customer samples and ensure receive proper approval from a customer. Communicate with customers on a weekly basis to provide project status and assist with invoicing using iLAB. Generate a final data delivery document and ensure that deadlines are met.
Assist in the maintenance of laboratory equipment including performing daily calibration; monitor levels of solvent and gases. Learn and execute backup duties for other equipment to help cover when other staff is out. Other duties as assigned.
Perform sample accessioning in accordance with ICBR and PM policies.
Expected Salary:
$13 - $16 per hour, commensurate with education and experience.
Required Qualifications:
BA/BS in related scientific field required with hands-on experience using micro pipettors in basic laboratory and scientific methods. Optionally, 4 years of experience in science related field with at least 3 years in core specific applications. Research-based experience preferred.
Core or technology specific licensure and/or certifications where applicable. Additionally yearly certificate and compliance training if required.
Preferred:
Previous experience with protein sample preparation and fractionation
Understanding of liquid chromatography and trouble-shooting
Experience in Mass spectrometry and proteomics data analysis (Mascot, Scaffold, ProteinPilot, Proteome
Discoverer, Max Quant) and acquisition (Xcalibur)
Ability to communicate in writing and speaking
Good Time management skills
Good Chemistry and biochemistry skills
Lab teaching ability and interest
