The College of Journalism and Communications (CJC) at the University of Florida (UF) is seeking an Executive Director of Advancement to provide leadership over the office of advancement for CJC. The Office of Advancement is responsible for all activities related to fundraising, alumni engagement, donor relations and stewardship, media properties support, external relations, career and corporate partnerships. This position reports dually to the Dean of the College and Assistant Vice President of Development, the incumbent is the chief development officer of the College, and is responsible for developing and executing the College’s advancement strategy to generate private philanthropic support and engage constituents in support of the College’s transformational needs as defined by the Dean and in alignment with the strategic initiatives of UF Advancement (UFA). The incumbent will serve as a strategic partner with the College and UFA ensuring conformity with overall university advancement programs and goals and in promoting a culture of philanthropy by broadening constituents’ understanding of the value of giving.

Key Duties:

  • Identification, cultivation, and solicitation of new prospects $100,000 and above for the College of Journalism and Communications.

  • Build a portfolio of fundraising prospects and strategically manage relationships through face-to-face visits to bring gift solicitations to closure.

  • Attends college and UF Advancement (UFA) functions.

  • As steward of major gift prospects, coordinates with Journalism staff their appropriate involvement with donors interested in specific college activities.

  • Establishes and maintains contact with prospects to develop their interest and participation in major Journalism fundraising projects and to provide information concerning the utilization of gifts.

  • Develop and present major gift proposals and acknowledge and recognize gifts in ways that are meaningful to donors and appropriate to the mission, vision and values of the unit and UFA.

  • Manage and coordinate industry/alumni engagement with the CJC x NYC program (New York City based immersive program for students to integrate with professionals in the media industry).

  • Develop the next generation of practitioners by leading the stewardship efforts, working with faculty to recruit, and engaging thought leaders and influencers among the UF alumni base and beyond to address such issues as careers for women in sports.

  • Manage the stewardship of CJC’s corporate partners, private foundations, career services partners, and faculty philanthropic engagement through an expanded donor relations program.

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive communications plan to inform constituents and identified markets about the mission, vision, and values of the College, its funding priorities, and gift opportunities.

  • Serve as an advisor to the Dean and the faculty of the college on fundraising and alumni programs.

  • Evaluate the program using established attributes and metrics to produce accurate reports, to guide effective decision making and to achieve the vision “TB2”.

  • Responsible for oversight of alumni affairs programs and activities and public support programs and events for the college.

  • Plan and monitor the budget, using resources for best results in fundraising and planning activities involving volunteers, prospects, faculty and administration.

Expected Salary:

Competitive and commensurate with experience

Minimum Requirements:

Master's degree in appropriate area of specialization and eight years of appropriate experience; or a bachelor's degree in appropriate areas of specialization and ten years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 8 years of major gift fundraising experience with proven success soliciting major gifts of $100,000 and above.

  • Prior experience in a college or university setting, enthusiasm for fundraising in a comprehensive research university and the desire to work collegially within a goal-oriented fundraising organization.

  • A strong working knowledge of fundraising principles, methods, and standards.

  • Strong leadership, strategic planning and management skills with the ability to motivate and inspire others in a team environment.

  • Expertise in developing and communicating solicitation strategies.

  • Ability to work collaboratively and as a team player.

  • The ability to work strategically, implement and build constituency programs and activities, along with a talent for motivating volunteers.

  • Competency in problem solving.

  • Must be an outstanding communicator and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills; interpersonal skills; and the ability to work collegially and interact effectively with a diverse constituency.

  • An appreciation for and support of diversity in the workplace in all its forms; proven success working with stakeholders; excellent strategic planning and project management skills; experience in a data-driven environment; organizational skills; and the ability to lead, influence and motivate others are required.

  • Effective time management, project management and organizational skills.

  • An appreciation for and track record of active support of diversity in the workplace in all of its forms.

  • The incumbent should be computer proficient in these areas: Windows, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Outlook, WWW browsers. Working knowledge of a donor database and tracking system.

  • The ability and willingness to travel. A valid driver license and good driving record are essential.
