Cornerstone Credit Union Accounting Manager-Onsite in Freeport, Illinois

Position Purpose

Develop, manage, and maintain reliable accounting information and reporting on income, expenses, assets, liabilities, and capital for management planning and decision-making and for fulfillment of financial report requirement. Reconcile GL and bank accounts. Manage the activities of the accounting department and staff. Ensure that reports, accounts, systems, policies, and practices adhere to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).

Essential Functions

  1. Manage accounting functions to include AP, AR, budgets, cash flow, cost management, credit and collections, financial analysis, financial reporting and recordkeeping, GL and investments.

  2. Implement policies and procedures for the accounting department and ensure that policies and procedures reflect currently regulations, and are communicated to and implemented by subordinates.

  3. Reconcile revenue reports, unbilled variances, special projects, and claims disbursements. Prepare daily balance sheet (loan and share) analysis. Prepare daily cash position analysis.

  4. Responsible for general ledger reconciliation, analysis of financial accounts, and preparation of journal entries. Provide end-of-month close and produce monthly financial statements. Prepare or assist with incurred cost and provisional rate reports as necessary.

  5. Ensure that all activities of the department are in accordance with GAAP and that the accounting records are maintained accurately and in compliance with laws and regulations.

  6. Maintain a highly motivated, well-trained staff, evaluating the performance of the staff on a regular basis. Resolve employee questions or conflicts.

  7. Develop and implement processes to streamline credit union accounting procedures.

  8. Develop and maintain complex computer-based analyses and reports of credit union accounting records on a regular basis.

  9. Provide regular reports to management of all online accounting activities for the credit union’s accounting/bookkeeping department.

  10. Monitor fixed-asset management.

  11. Conduct special accounting studies, analyses, and special projects as requested by management.

  12. Provides overall direction for the effective recording, analyzing, and reporting of all financial results, encompassing budgeting planning, analysis, consolidated financial reporting, cost accounting, systems, and banking.

  13. Delivers highly effective financial support to the company’s operation general management, both personally and through the accounting staff; this includes using financial analysis to effectively support management decision-making, and communicating the analysis effectively to non-financial management.

  14. Attends Asset, Liability Management, Investment meetings and constructs clearly written reports for the Chief Financial Officer. Performs special research and development projects as requested by Chief Financial Officer.

  15. Assist with the management of the credit union investment portfolio to ensure maximum return under the existing investment policy within the regulatory guidelines; shares in the overall responsibility for the asset/liability management of the organization.

  16. In conjunction with the management team, prepares short-term and long-range plans. Establishes a budget of operations for the organization and by branch. Ensures that budgeted goals are achieved and cost objectives are met. Measures performance to goals and prepares variance reports for Chief Financial Officer.

  17. Ensures sound services and working relationships with members, with governmental bodies, key staff of important vendors, with outside services, and with the general public.

  18. Use ALM software to prepare projections to “what if” scenarios as directed by ALCO or executive management and returns findings and reports.

  19. Participates in adjunct meetings discussing financial service concerns.

Position Requirements:

  1. Minimum five years of related experience with increasing responsibilities in accounting and finance with one or more financial service organizations or credit unions is required.

  2. A college degree and possibly an advanced degree or certificate.

  3. The fully qualified candidate will have a broad exposure to all fundamental financial and accounting disciplines including general accounting, auditing, branch cost accounting, planning and ratio analysis, ALM process and GAAP analysis, financial information systems, credit and risk management.

  4. The individual selected will have a demonstrated capacity for effective decision-making, business analysis, and forecasting/modeling, as well as the ability to work very independently. He or she must have excellent planning skills. The ability to work effectively with regulators and auditors is required.

  5. Performance appraisal, previous recruitment/hiring, budget, and policy development experience is preferred. Overall knowledge of credit union procedures, programs and policies. Working knowledge of regulations and rules that govern financial institutions.
