Mott Community College - Flint, MI Gateway to College Resource Specialist in Flint, Michigan

Purpose

The primary purpose of this position is to provide a broad range of services and support to students ages sixteen through twenty-four enrolled in the Gateway to College (GtC) program. This position develops and maintains strong relationships with students and promotes student success, and is responsible for designing and implementing recruitment and retention strategies, maintains student files and records, monitors student course schedules, provides academic and career supports, and coaches students on areas such as balancing life and school, and goal setting to support their academic and personal success.

 

Scope

To design and deliver workshops on topics such as (but not limited to): time management, developing college level classroom habits, studying and test-taking strategies, accessing campus and community resources; actively collaborates with the GtC staff and other teams to identify and use innovative and engaging practices; builds a consistent programmatic culture to encourage student success, and to continually improve the GtC program, and utilizes a strengths-based approach to connect and engage with students.

 

Dimension of Job

The GtC program serves young people at risk of not completing high school or who have stopped out of high school. The program gives students the opportunity to earn a high school diploma while transitioning to a college campus and earning college credit. Students succeed in an educational setting with the support of the program's caring team and student support specialists who each possess experience and commitment to supporting under-served youth. In their first year, students take classes in a learning community as the foundation for their matriculation into college-level coursework. The GtC program changes lives and helps youth to reinvent themselves and improve their futures. The GtC program is part of a nationwide network of college partners implementing Gateway to College as an initiative under the Achieve the Dream network.

 

Supervisory Responsibility:

There are no supervisory responsibilities, but may serve as a formal work group leader for assigned staff, instructors, and students.
