Special Information

  • This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at the Flagstaff Mountain campus with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.
  • This position is posted as Assistant Director, LGBTQIA+ Student Services, which is a working title. The NAU system title for this position is Assistant Director, Student Life Experience.

Job Description

This position supports the Director as the LGBTQIA+ administrative leader in the vibrant and fast-paced Office of Inclusion: Multicultural & LGBTQIA+ Student Services (IMQ). The Assistant Director specializes in working with the LGBTQIA+ student community on campus as well as working collaboratively with community organizations to identify LGBTQIA+ community resources that provide additional support to NAU students. The Assistant Director will also support multicultural programming and initiatives in the Office of Inclusion to better serve the intersections and diversity of the NAU student populations that IMQ serves. The Assistant Director, LGBTQIA+ Student Services, works to support, empower, and promote the success of all students by 1) educating the campus community on the issues, challenges, and concerns of cultural, gender, and sexual identities and 2) developing and implementing programs and initiatives to sustain an inclusive campus community. Support for students includes providing leadership to student initiatives, advising student organizations centered on cultural, gender, and/or sexual identities, and developing collaborative partnerships with university departments and outside constituent groups. This position will report directly to the IMQ Director.

Programming and Services - 50%

  • Develops and implements programming and support initiatives for the LGBTQIA+ student community at NAU.
  • Develops and coordinates programming in recognition of LGBTQIA+ celebration and awareness events and activities (e.g., Coming Out Month, Trans Day of Remembrance, etc.).
  • Collaborates with on-campus and local LGBTQIA+ organizations, committees, and task forces to support LGBTQIA+ students and initiatives.
  • Develops and maintains educational, social, support, referral, and resource programs and services for students regarding issues of sexual and gender identities.
  • Advises student group members and leaders regarding program planning and development, group process concerns, leadership and personal development, and University policies.
  • Serves as a point of contact for students who have experienced bias incidents to provide reporting options, referrals for post-incident counseling, and assisting in any follow up to contribute to a resolution of the incident.
  • Provides direct support and resources to students while creating a safe pace and environment for walk-ins and student interactions.
  • Monitors engagement of students through event attendance, personal contacts, and referrals.
  • Maintain student files, databases, and records in accordance with federal guidelines (FERPA).
  • Presents and assists with various multicultural/intersectional workshops, campus activities, and events.
  • Participates in outreach events and activities on behalf of the Office of Inclusion.
  • Facilitates presentations about IMQ resources and support to diverse groups, including prospective students, current students, families, staff, and faculty.
  • Presents and facilitates various diversity, equity, and inclusion trainings for students.

Supervision - 20%

  • Participates in the hiring, on-boarding, and training of professional, graduate student, peer mentors, and student staff.
  • Supervises and manages a Senior Coordinator, Graduate Assistant, and several student workers, including Peer Mentors and Program Assistants.
  • Manages staff performance and provides continuous feedback and guidance.
  • Facilitates staff learning and development through intentional training opportunities.
  • Assists in supervising the front desk, as needed.
