Job Overview:

The Principal Civil structural Designer Lead supervises and leads the civil/structural designers and technicians for all phases of civil/structural design work for onshore projects. Ensures teams are provided with the correct resources to ensure quality and timely of deliverables. Assists in planning schedules and manpower requirements for projects. Assumes responsibility for cost, schedule, quantity and budget control. Ensures effective communications among other engineering disciplines and effective management of change. Responsible for assigning various design/drafting tasks to personnel with appropriate skill levels both in the London office and High Value Engineering Centres. Assumes responsibility for quality of deliverables throughout the design. Maintains and promotes a focus on McDermott’s end product whether engineering, fabrication or construction. Is proactive and flexible to adapt to different work environments.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Assists the project Lead Engineer in preparation of the Project Engineering Plan.

  • Takes the Lead role on the civil/structural design team and coordinates the Project Execution through MOPEX (Multi office Project Execution)

  • Responsible for the performance, coordination and quality of all civil, structural and architectural modeling and design/drafting work within the assigned project. Performance of projects to be measured in terms of completion of the project tasks and deliverables within approved budget and schedule.

  • Responsible for Quality of Projects, to be measured in terms of deliverable and work processes meeting department procedures and standards with minimum rework and design errors reported from the field.

  • Regularly reports status to upper management.

  • Ensures effective management of change and responsibility of schedule and quantities.

  • Ensures accuracy of the deliverables and consistency between Lead Office and High Value Engineering Centre

  • Attends internal progress meetings

  • Understands MTO requirements and is able to assist Senior Engineers with MTO requirements

  • Ensures effective communication among other engineering disciplines

  • Ensures that Clash checking is performed as appropriate

  • Provide guidance to the team about Structural concepts, typical arrangements in steel and concrete, paving and UG layout

  • Ensure that drawings provide a constructible and safe solution in fabrication and construction

  • Leads by example and maintains discipline in accordance with Company values

Essential Qualifications and Education:

  • HNC / HND Civil Engineering Certificate / Diploma (eligible for technician membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers or the Institution of Engineering Designers) or equivalent

  • Mastered current engineering design and drafting software packages and plant layout design

  • Familiar with design codes such as AISC, ACI, NFPA, IBC, AASHTO, and ASCE

  • 15 - 20 years’ of work experience in civil design, modeling & drafting

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in Heavy Industrial/ Oil & Gas type facilities as a design lead.

  • Ability to maintain design within our company methods and procedures

  • Ability to independently organize and prioritize work assignments and deal with conflicting priorities.

  • Ability to negotiate issues with project engineers, clients, vendors and partners

  • Strong communication skill and professional ethics

  • Experience using Intergraph S3D and E3D

  • Familiar with recent version of AutoCAD

Preferred Essential Qualifications and Education:

  • Understanding of Tekla

  • Understanding of Autodesk Civil 3D
