Statement of Job:

The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) is seeking applicants for the position of Facilities Maintenance Worker CL2, Grounds. Employees in this classification are responsible for performing manual work to maintain cleanliness, orderliness, appearance and sanitation of campus grounds, roads, walkways, buildings, etc. This position performs defined tasks related to performing grounds keeping responsibilities, custodial services, and/or minor and basic maintenance responsibilities. The work is primarily routine in nature but may also involve less routine tasks requiring broader knowledge of operations and equipment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities - Responsibilities are a representative sample of essential class duties

  • Maintains facilities and grounds:

  • Performs basic ground activities, such as digging, mowing, weed removal, trimming trees, picking up litter, etc.

  • Plants, waters, and clips assigned gardens and landscaping.

  • Removes snow from sidewalks and around buildings using shovels and/or snowblowers

  • Operates a variety of vehicles, equipment, and tools; utilizes a variety of complex equipment and tool (such as small front-end loaders) to perform defined responsibilities; operates all grounds mechanical equipment such as hand tools, mowers, tractors, plow vehicles, and front end loaders.

  • Monitors and performs routine maintenance on complex equipment.

  • Monitors a central supply area for an assigned building and notifies the supervisor of any supply needs or issues.

  • Performs facility set-ups and take-downs as directed.

  • Provides work guidance to less experienced employees, such as answering procedural and p rocess-related questions.

  • Adheres to safety procedures, such as reporting mechanical and/or safety issues.

    Th is is an essential position at the University of Maine at Farmington, in which winter hours are weather dependent, and the employee will be required to report to work during inclement weather, campus emergencies and administrative holidays.

    Qualifications:

    Classification Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Providing exemplary customer service.

  • A bility to work independently.

  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

  • Recognizing and repairing system problems; equipment use and troubleshooting.

  • Abillity to understand written and oral communications, including the ability to understand Material Safety Data Sheets.

  • Applying applicable compliance rules and regulations.

  • Monitoring and maintaining inventory.

    Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • One (1) year of custodial or grounds related work experience. Additional qualifying experience may substitute for the education required of the assigned position.

  • Valid Driver's License in good standing (based on UMS stardards).

    Physical Requirements

    Positions in this class typically require:

  • Ability to perform physical activities that require talking, hearing, seeing and considerable and repetitive use of arms and legs and moving entire body, such as reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, climbing, lifting, bending, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.

  • Heavy work: The ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds frequently, and/or in excess of twenty (20) pounds of force constantly to move objects. Lifting and exerting forces more than fifty (50) pounds requires assistance by other employee(s) or mechanical assistance. Individual forces must never exceed fifty (50) pounds.

  • Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions, intense noises and travel.

  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions

  • Ability to overtime, which may include occasional nights and weekends
