Humanetics Machine Shop Supervisor in Farmington Hills, Michigan

Role Purpose: Supervises and coordinates the activities of Machinists.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

Interpret all aspects of blueprints and apply interpretation to assigned tasks utilizing mathematical equations requiring addition, subtractions, multiplication, division, geometry, and trigonometry when needed.

Distribute and direct daily work assignments received from Production Control Department, Research, and Design Department, to all subordinates as well as monitor assignment for timely completion utilizing job cards and comparing output.

Determine departmental work schedules/assignments and verify/approve overtime.

Integrate with other company departments to coordinate activities for timely/accurate completion of production.

Make recommendations for solutions to manufacturing and other relevant problems. Assist the Human Resource Department in hiring and counselling subordinates.

Approve vacations, sick days, other absences and personal holidays for subordinates.

Responsible for reporting all absences and tardiness to the Human Resources Department.

Responsible for disciplining, evaluating and motivating subordinates.

Verify orders prepared by Tool Crib Attendant for materials and supplies required for the department and receive appropriate approval from Director of Manufacturing for the orders.

Complete new employee orientation and enforce all safety procedures for protective clothing, safety gear, equipment and chemical usage and any other company imposed policy.

Attend management meetings as required.

Monitor and maintain the departmental budget.

Review, approve and submit subordinate time cards to the Payroll Department.

Monitor part rejects and determine solution to machining problems.

Ensure that all machinery is well maintained and immediate service is given for repairs.

Interface with Design Department to coordinate blueprint design with machining process.

Visually monitor the quality of finished parts, comparing to blueprints as needed.

Train all subordinates to perform their job in an efficient and accurate manner as well as monitor their daily progress by evaluating daily job cards and comparing job output.

Prepare and give subordinate evaluations in a timely manner as well as recommend salary increases for subordinates to the Human Resource Department.

Other duties as assigned.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as blueprints, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, routers, and procedure manuals. Ability to present information verbally to subordinates, supervisor, co-workers and in groups.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Physical Demands

  • Required to stand for extended periods of time.

  • Occasionally required to bend.

  • Adequate dexterity for using various hand tools

  • Ability to install and uninstall tools, parts, and fixtures from machines

  • Visual acuity to read directions and prints, and to inspect parts closely to ensure they meet specifications.

  • Visual acuity to perform tasks on the computer.

  • Ability to keyboard.

  • Ability to communicate with subordinates, co-workers, and supervisors.

  • Physical strength to lift and carry 35 pounds occasionally.

    Supervision: Machine shop employees

    Critical Competencies:

  • Basic math, measuring devices and blueprint reading. Advanced math such as trigonometry preferred.

  • Ability to operate a variety of machines, i.e., mills, lathes, grinder, drill presses and cut­ off saws to perform machine operations such as turning, boring, reaming, and milling.

  • Ability to operate CNC machinery. Must be able to operate holding fixtures, vices, indexable heads, sine bars and clamping equipment as well as utilize wrenches, shims, parallels, blocks, planar gauges and clamps.

    Education and/or Experience:

  • High school degree or equivalent, A.S. degree in machining preferred.

  • 10 years of machining experience including general machining, machine tool experience, machine repair and CNC machining preferred.

  • 5years of supervisory experience preferred.

  • Meets job specifications outlined in Humanetics Machinists job descriptions and possess analytical skills as well as communicate effectively as a supervisor.
