TITLE: Craft Mechanic

DIVISION: Facilities Management

DEPARTMENT: Facilities Management

BASIC FUNCTION : Performs craft mechanical functions for maintenance and repair of all campus buildings and facilities involving carpentry, incidental painting, appliance and general maintenance.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL NEEDED:

EDUCATION: High School diploma. Some trade school education or equivalent related experience.

EXPERIENCE : 3 years of experience in carpentry and general maintenance. Demonstrated interpersonal skills. Possession of a valid CT motor vehicle license. Good physical condition and mobility.

UNUSUAL WORK CONDITIONS: Must be able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be available to work during inclement weather, as well as during peak periods of required overtime, and emergency call-ins on a rotational basis. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50lbs. Able to work on roofs and climb ladders. Able to work at various heights and in all types of weather conditions.

REPORTS TO : Director, Facilities Management

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Performs craft mechanical functions for the University and Prep Campus. This involves:
  • Providing general maintenance and repair of all buildings and facilities.

  • Perform work requests from staff and students.

  • Interact with staff and students to determine the problem, assessing problem, determining appropriate corrective methods and potential need for assistance.

  • Assess malfunctions, determining appropriate corrective methods and determine when there is a need for outside assistance.

  • Maintain mechanical operations in each facility involving carpentry, general maintenance and incidental painting.

  • Assist other departments by removing ceiling tiles and opening walls.

  • Provide emergency service during, before and after hours.

  • Ensuring the quality and timely schedule of requested services.

  • Maintaining a daily log of completed repairs, and completed work orders.

  • Assist with snow removal and ice patrol process.

  • Assist with unclogging toilets.

  1. Performs craft mechanical functions for the university community and in support of the Office of Residence Life. This involves:
  • Repair student damages and vandalism orders, damage infractions, etc., inspecting all dormitories, barnyard and townhouse units annually.

  • Repair or replace damaged furniture in dorm rooms.

  • Loft beds in student dorm rooms.

  • Ceiling repair and installation of new suspended ceilings.

  • Install window air conditioners in both dorm rooms and offices.

  • Drape and shade repairs including rods, hooks and rollers.

  • Wall and door repairs and incidental painting.

  • Bathroom dispenser, stall and bathroom hardware repairs.

  • Repair wood floors, carpet and VCT tile floors.

  • Inspecting facilities and performing preventative maintenance.

  • Interacting with Energy department, Office of Resident Life and Housing, Security and Fire Marshal dealing with problems, damage, infractions, etc.

  1. Provides special and/or complex carpentry assistance as requested and assists in the preparation of special and annual campus events. This involves:
  • Gutter installations, repairs and cleanings.

  • Constructing platforms, securing dance floors, manufacturing electrical poles to secure electrical panels, etc.

  • Build venue for Commencement and setting up

  • Setting up venues for Masses and athletic events.

  • Seasonal decorations campus-wide.

  • Install storm windows and new replacement windows.

  • Repair clapboard siding, asphalt shingle and cedar shake roofs.

  • Masonry repairs to walls, slabs, ramps, sidewalks and steps.

  • Troubleshoot and repair appliance issues.

  • Installation of small projects including wall construction with wood or steel stud framing, insulation, sheetrock and taping.

  • Hanging banners, signage, artwork and backdrops, bulletin and white boards.

  • Installing counters, shelves, doors and frames.

  • Clearing roofs of debris.

  1. Participates in the professional development of the Physical Plant. This involves:
  • Participating in staff meetings as requested.

  • Communicating effectively with supervisor concerning pertinent university, departmental and other matters.

  • Ensuring the proper maintenance of vehicles, tools and other related equipment.

  • Promoting an image of efficiency and courtesy throughout the university community and consistent with the department’s mission.

  1. Promote safe and secure working conditions. This involves:
  • Performing proper inspections of all facilities.

  • Maintaining a safe and clean work environment.

  • Wearing safety shoes, uniforms and any PPE provided at all times as appropriate.

  • Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.

  • Promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.

  • Ensure proper maintenance of vehicles, tools and other related equipment.

  • Promoting the proper utilization of equipment and tools, notifying supervisor immediately of any unsafe working conditions.

  • Answer requests in a professional manner.

  1. Performs other related duties as directed or dictated by responsibilities.
