Job Description

Position Summary:

The Genomics Technologist III will work collaboratively with the laboratory team to provide testing services to the clients. Under the general supervision of a Cancer Genomics Supervisor/Manager, the Genomics Technologist III will perform all necessary laboratory testing in the detection, diagnosis, and prognosis of disease in a prompt, accurate and reliable matter according to established company and departmental policies and procedures. Additional tasks can be assigned at the discretion of Management.

Schedule: Monday to Friday, 4:00 am to 12:30 pm

Job Responsibilities: Genomics Technologist III duties may include but are not necessarily limited to the following:
Follows written laboratory procedures for the correct handling and processing of clinical specimens.
Performs at least two clinical laboratory procedures/assays/technical domains of low, moderate and high complexity in accordance with standards set forth in sectional laboratory procedures consistently and in a timely manner
Able to perform secondary review of at least two assays before final submission to pathologist
Perform tests which require the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility, with minimal supervision by the direct Supervisor/Manager, in only those specialties or subspecialties in which they are qualified by education, training and experience.
Maintains an up to date working knowledge of all technical procedures in the department. Reviews all pertinent SOPMs. Maintains an up to date working knowledge of all technical procedures in the department and operations of all instrumentation.
Reports any issues arise that many influence data quality or turnaround time (TAT)
Meets 12 hours of continuing education and documents within Media Lab
Reviews communications logs/emails daily
Manipulate and operate simple and complex laboratory equipment including computers; may perform maintenance and limited tear down and replacement of parts of laboratory equipment; problem-solve equipment malfunctions.
Operates laboratory instruments and performs routine maintenance & procedural calibrations. Diagnoses, troubleshoots and documents all lab instrument and/or reagent problems. Performs preventative and corrective maintenance/repairs and maintains records of actions. Contacts technical services representatives when necessary to resolve problems.
Performs proficiency testing according to protocol.
Maintains a clean and well organized work area with adequate supplies and/or controls for given assay. Notifies the Supervisor/Manager/Director and/or designee when supplies and/or control are running low or needed.
Properly labels, dates and initials reagents and/or consumables that are put "in use" and signs out reagents and/or consumables in the inventory tracking system
Accurately reads and interprets the test orders, records, transcribes and maintains records of patient test results according to protocol.
Reviews accuracy and completeness of work. Recognizes unexpected or unreasonable results and/or testing delays. Identifies the cause and takes appropriate action. Applies professional knowledge and judgment to analytical and decision making. Escalates all problems that cannot be solved immediately to the Supervisor/Manager/Director and/or designee.
Reviews Pending Logs, researches and resolves missing specimen issues. If unable to resolve issue, then the issue must be given to someone on the next shift to continue the process to resolve. If no resolution can be found, the Supervisor/Manager/Director and/or designee should be notified.
Completes routine and STAT testing within acceptable turn-around time guidelines.
Pay very close attention to detail and completes work error-free.
Applies principles of confidentiality in all laboratory and patient matters.
Brings unusual situations to the attention of the of Supervisor/Manager/Director and/or designee
Ability to express ideas and report findings in a comprehensive and thorough manner.
Interacts with co-workers in a way that promotes a harmonious and cooperative working environment.
Develops and promotes a "patient first" attitude towards all internal and external associates of the laboratory.
Wears proper personal protective equipment (PPE) in the lab at all times, especially while handling reagents, consumables, samples and/or controls
Participates in the evaluation and development of new procedures, methods and instruments.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Responds positively to changes in workload as needed. May be required to adjust ones schedule, at needs/demands of the company
Helps other, and performs duties that need to be performed especially when unassigned
Demonstrates the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines
Must be able to remain calm and professional, even under stressful situations.
Must be able to work well as part of a team, as well as work independently with limited supervision.
Presents a professional appearance and manner.
