Zions Bancorporation is seeking an experienced Head of Market Risk Analytics . Capital Markets at Zions has been growly rapidly over the last five years and is a key strategic growth area for the Bank. To ensure that the risk and control infrastructure can support the new levels of business activity, the Bank seeks to enhance its risk team independent of the business’ front-line revenue-generating units. The Market Risk Analytics - Director will be responsible for enhancing the quantitative market risk management framework supporting current business activities and prospective strategic growth plans.

This individual would also be responsible for developing the needed analytical market risk tools to meet future regulatory requirements around market risk, including but not limited to the Market Risk Rule (MRR), Fundamental Review of the Trading Book (FRTB), and Basel III Endgame market risk requirements. In additional to market risk analytics, they will also be responsible for developing and managing quantitative analytics needed for Counterparty Credit Risk management for trading exposures, including measurement of the Credit Valuation Adjustment (CVA). As part of the independent market risk control function, this individual would also be responsible for partnering with 1st line trading desks to ensure front-office analytics are effective, including possibly independently testing these analytics, if required.

To be successful, the Market Risk Analytics - Director will partner with both the 1st line business unit executives, e.g. traders and desk quants, and 2nd line risk units, e.g. Compliance, Operational Risk, and Credit, to enhance the existing market risk frameworks supporting the 1st line activities.

Responsibilities:

This individual will be primarily responsible for establishing and enhancing the market risk and counterparty credit risk analytics and control framework over the Bank’s Capital Markets. This is a leadership role which will eventually manage 1-2 staff, as the framework develops over the next few years.

This individual will be responsible for establishing the appropriate controls, processes & procedures, and analytical tools needed to measure and control market risk for the Bank’s trading activities. They will also be responsible for developing the analytics, and associated processes, to measure counterparty exposure for covered trading positions. The risk activities overseen by this individual will be independent of the front-line risk units directly taking and managing the risk. The Market Risk Analytics - Director will require the depth of experience to work collaboratively with these business units, while providing independent assurance to the Bank’s leadership team that risks are being prudentially taken and managed.

Major responsibilities include the following:

  • Develop and maintain strategy/vision for market risk and counterparty credit risk analytics needed to effectively measure, control, and communicate risk to management.

  • Ensures business activities are effectively governed within the applicable sections of the Bank’s overall Risk Management Framework (RMF)

  • Partner with business units to communicate suitable risk appetite to management and then independently manage and maintain risk infrastructure to help business operate within appetite and/or manage exceptions

  • Independently measure, reporting/monitor risk from Capital Markets business activities, e.g. market risk and counterparty credit risk

  • Develop and maintain risk and quantitative analytics to support Capital Markets business activities, i.e. Credit Valuation Adjustment (CVA), Counterparty Exposures, Value-at-Risk (VaR)

  • Serves as risk SME on regulatory and governance topics for Market Risk and Counterparty Credit Risk measurement. Function as an independent sounding board to Capital Markets team.

  • Partner with Capital Markets, Enterprise Finance, and 2nd line Risk Management teams to ensure that all financial and regulatory requirements are compliant.

  • Participating in various Bank risk management committees as needed

  • Recruit, develop, and manage talent necessary to maintain effective risk management oversight as required by applicable policies and procedures

    Qualifications

  • Requires an Advanced degree (Masters degree or higher) in a quantitative field such as Computational Finance or Financial Engineering.

  • Requires 10-15+ experience in financial services with leadership experience in a market risk area, e.g. analytics, risk management, reporting

  • Experience in leading industry practices in the areas of market risk and counterparty credit risk at a large institution currently subject to the MRR

  • Experience with Sales & Trading activities, including but not limited derivatives and on balance sheet hedging activity required.

  • Strong risk and derivatives modeling experience.

  • Strong communication skills to interact with a wide audience, including executive management, auditors/regulators, and traders.

  • Deep experience leading highly technical or quantitative teams.

  • Relevant professional certifications are a plus.
