Job/Position DescriptionMaintenance Specialist I serves as a building maintenance and construction technician responsible for the prompt and proper repair of physical plant and building infrastructure. The work is composed of repairing and maintaining buildings and associated utility systems to include water mains and lines, sanitary drains and septic waste systems, secondary electrical lines, communications network input sources and gas lines. Work will include itemizing needed materials and supplies. Completes maintenance work orders and requisitions. Performs Preventative Maintenance Duties as Assigned. May train and lead others in Projects. Works under general supervisions with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.Essential Job FunctionsAttends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned. Performs maintenance and repair of buildings and related plant infrastructure. This work includes a basic knowledge of the applicable Life Safety Codes and of the State Fire Marshall's requirements. Most of this work focuses on the repair of floor coverings (primarily tile and carpet), walls, doors, windows, electrical outlets (and occasionally appliances such as washers and dryers), and plumbing repair to include water, gas and drain lines. Operates equipment safely and effectively. Moves furniture and other furnishings, as necessary. Must be able to work off hours as Maintenance ON-Call emergency responder 1. Prepare interior and exterior ceilings, walls, and trim before painting. Properly paint prepared area.2. Mix various colors of paints needed throughout the facility.3. Ability to use proper tools for each job performed.4. Clean and take proper tools for each job performed5. Clean paint and glass in areas after completing work assignments6. Replace broken window glasses and glazes with proper putty as needed.7. Stands emergency maintenance on-call on a rotating basis according to department policy and procedures.Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agencyand#146;s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. Registrations, Licensure Requirements or CertificationsMust possess valid Texas driverand#146;s license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out-of-state driverand#146;s license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy. Knowledge Skills AbilitiesKnowledge of the repair, maintenance, construction, and carpentry; building materials, plumbing and electrical fixtures; of plumbing soldiering and sweating procedures and techniques; and of basic safety regulations. Ability to estimate materials; to apply proper methods, techniques, and procedures in the maintenance and repair of buildings and related equipment. Initial Screening CriteriaTwo or more yearand#146;s construction/maintenance experience is required. Technical knowledge and experience concerning plumbing, masonry, welding, carpentry, painting or electrical is required. Successful completion of a technical school with course work in construction, maintenance or other related fields may substitute for (1) year of job/hands on experience.
