Description
If you are an experienced Design Engineer looking for an opportunity to grow, Copeland has an opportunity for you! Based in our Eden Prairie MN office, the Mechanical Design Engineer duties will include invention, ideation, design layouts, tolerance application, material selection, and facilitating engineering documentation. This includes Bills of Material and Engineering Change Notices for new and modified products. This person will also own the design and development, including CAD modeling, engineering drawings, and technical documentation support. This role may also include responsibility for technological analysis, priority planning, problem-solving, and delivery of quality design outputs.
As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, YOU WILL:
Required
Collaborate with marketing and sales in the generation of product requirements
Collaborate to develop innovative concepts and ideas
Communicate project requirements to others (local or global)
Communicate project status w/ new product development team
Design and develop tests for new products and/or feasibility studies
Make engineering documents, assembly drawings, installation instructions, and test specifications
Participate on a team developing new electro-mechanical products
Resolve technical problems on projects
Design and evaluate innovative concepts
Provide creative thinking and advice to other members (local or global) of the new product development team
Write detailed engineering requirements for products with little guidance
Preferred
Coordinate EPR/PPR with procurement and manufacturing as part of the NPD process
Develop and communicate detailed requirements to others (local or global)
Develop technical specifications that address new market / product requirements
Document NPD deliverables to complete projects
Ensure technical and customer requirements are met
Provide direction to / mentor others on design and application of NPD products
Provide final review and/or design authority on new products
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCES & SKILLS:
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or Mechatronics + 2 years of related hands-on experience.
Ability to apply the fundamental concepts of the following mechanical engineering principles: Mechanics of Materials, Electrical AC/DC Circuits, Machine Dynamics, Engineering Design, Fluid Dynamics, and Applied Thermodynamics
Ability to generate conceptual design solutions, including building and testing of innovative concepts
Ability to communicate with internal customers
Basic familiarity with NPD process
Experience doing 2D and 3D drawings
Experience with lathes, CNC machining, and other model shop tools
Ability to generate multiple options to solve a design or product problem
Ability to generate test plan
Basic skill level in performing a FMEA
Demonstrated skill in prototyping components with available lab tools and equipment
Experience in Lean Design
Experience in several design functions
Experience performing finite element analysis
Ability to create completely new product ideas and conceptualize innovative designs
Ability to do Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA)
Experience performing tolerance stack up analysis
Authorization to work in the United States now and in the future without sponsorship.
PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCES & SKILLS
5+ Years of hands-on experience
Ability to do Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA)
Ability to train others (local or global) in performing an FMEA, writing a design analysis, and how to release products through the documentation processes
Advanced skills in performing finite element analysis
Experience performing tolerance stack up analysis
Knowledge of statistical tools to develop design concepts
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, employee may be required to sit for long periods of time.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision with long periods of time on a computer screen.
Work Environment
This role works in a typical office environment with frequent exposure to the manufacturing production floor.
