As an Actuarial Modeling Specialist, you will provide actuarial and technical support for Optum’s cloud-based Actuarial Models that are utilized by clients to price and forecast healthcare costs. You will work with a team of actuaries, underwriters, data engineers and developers to develop, maintain and enrich Optum’s cloud-based rating models.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work within databricks environment; utilize Python and SQL to conform and prepare data for Optum rating models

  • Work with clients to understand and document customization requirements

  • Design and implement client-specific solutions for Optum rating models. Analyze advantages and limitations of multiple solutions options. Recommend and develop preferred option

  • Review, audit, and evaluate data from internal and external sources - includes data cleaning, manipulation, reconciliation and analysis

  • Perform analysis and reconciliation of data sources using python/SQ

  • Other ad-hoc analyses as needed

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years Programming experience (Python, R, SQL, SAS, or similar language)

  • 3+ years healthcare claims data manipulation and reconciliation experience

  • 3+ years working with health care claims data including understanding of costs, expected claims, diagnosis codes, procedure codes and service categorization

  • 2+ years of experience managing and providing work direction to a team

  • Working knowledge of healthcare plan designs and cost sharing attributes

  • Demonstrated interpersonal and customer service skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Candidates on the Actuarial exam track, preferably with ASA or FSA credential

  • Experience working with large datasets and assessing data quality

  • Experience working with the StepWise Suite

  • Experience working as an underwriter or actuary in commercial healthcare

  • Experience with healthcare rating systems development

  • Proven solid leadership skills and initiative to lead a technical workstream independently

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for this role is $104,700 to $190,400 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
