Position Summary

The Colleges of Education and Natural Science at Michigan State University seek a creative and visionary director to lead a Research Center in Education and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The director, a well-established and respected researcher in education with experience in AI or learning technologies, will work with colleagues across the colleges to explore issues in education and AI. We invite candidates with substantial experience in educational research, innovative uses of learning technologies, and a track record of obtaining external funding to apply. The position is open with respect to disciplinary background. The successful candidate will hold a joint appointment with the Colleges of Education and Natural Science. The candidate's background will determine the department(s) where the candidate will be housed. The colleges have several grants in artificial intelligence and education, with current faculty from both colleges engaged in various efforts. The successful candidate will join this group to collaborate and provide leadership and vision to establish a vibrant research center in Education and AI at Michigan State University.

It is expected that the successful candidate will enter the position at the rank of professor, although associate professors with established records are encouraged to apply.  Candidates should demonstrate a record of accomplishment in research, obtaining external financial support for their work, and evidence of collaboration with local, state, or national education agencies, along with a commitment to issues of educational equity.  A strong record of teaching and mentoring junior researchers is expected.

Duties

Lead, direct, and build the new Center for Research in Education and AI. The successful candidate will establish and maintain strong partnerships and relationships with faculty across the university to build a multi-faceted research center focused on education and AI. The associated duties include (but are not limited to) working with other faculty who conduct research in Education and/or AI, and affiliated faculty to:

  • Produce high-quality, timely, relevant "research with consequence" in support of Education and AI.
  • Build and establish connections with other colleges on campus to pursue research in AI and Education.
  • Attract financial support from a diverse array of government and philanthropic entities in support of the Center's mission to explore the potential of AI to transform education and STEM education in particular.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Education, Educational Technology

Minimum Requirements
  • Earned doctorate in Education, Educational Technology, Learning Sciences, a STEM discipline or related field.
  • Proven record in publishing high-quality manuscripts
  • Successful record of seeking external funding to conduct research, with experience in managing large grant activities and staff.
  • Proven record of engaging in interdisciplinary and collaborative research
  • The capability to lead groups in developing grant proposals.
Desired Qualifications

Experience with data analytics, natural language processing, machine learning, large language models, robotics, and/or computational methods applied to the study of teaching and learning.

A background in using digital and AI technologies for learning, education, and work.
