Michigan State University(MSU) Assistant/Associate/Full Professor Tenure System in East Lansing, Michigan

Working/Functional Title

Assistant/Associate/Full Professor Tenure System

Position Summary

Michigan State University, Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences seeks applicants for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor who can build a vibrant research program applying data science to improve health, welfare and production in food producing animals.

Applicants from diverse fields of disciplinary expertise are invited to apply, including epidemiology, applied statistics, applied mathematics, bioinformatics, data science, computational sciences or artificial intelligence. Because we are looking for someone who can work in this cutting-edge transdisciplinary space, your field of academic training is less important. What is critical is the ability and desire to use large/big data and computational approaches to address challenges in food animal health, welfare, and production and to do so in collaboration with veterinary and animal science scientists and practitioners.

The successful candidate will join a department with a strong focus on research, teaching, and outreach, including several endowed chairs in multiple disciplines of animal science and health research. The successful candidate also will be part of the College of Veterinary Medicine's solution-based approach to sustainable food animal production, which includes optimizing animal health and welfare, mitigating antibiotic resistance, and enhancing the interface between society and food production.

Across their appointment, the successful candidate will be expected to:

  1. Research:
  • Lead and develop innovative research in the application of large/big data and computational approaches to address challenges in food animal health, welfare, and production.
  • Pursue external funding as the PI/PD to support research activities.
  • Publish high-quality research articles in reputable peer-reviewed journals.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including veterinarians, animal scientists, and computer scientists, to enhance research outcomes and foster a collaborative research environment.
  1. Outreach:
  • Lead outreach activities to develop and/or promote the application of computational data sciences and quantitative approaches to enhance food animal health, welfare and production.
  1. Teaching:
  • Develop graduate level courses that apply computational methods, artificial intelligence, advanced statistical methods or quantitative modeling to large data sets to enhance health, welfare, and production of food producing animals.
  • Supervise and mentor graduate students.
  1. Service:
  • Participate in departmental, college, and university committees.
  • Contribute to the advancement of the field of large/big data and computational sciences through peer review activities, editorial board memberships, and participation in professional societies.

Tenure system appointments require a greater percentage of time dedicated to both independent and collaborative, externally funded research, with less time devoted to clinical service. More information about the Tenure System is available at Tenure System Hiring Information (msu.edu).
