Eversource Energy Senior Engineer, Field Communications in East Berlin, Connecticut

Role and Scope of Position:

The Senior Engineer will work with complex systems and equipment, while providing engineering and technical services to support our growing organization. We offer a unique and exciting opportunity to explore the best of both worlds, working both in the office and the field on a variety of interesting projects. Areas of expertise include designing new substations and infrastructure, analyzing systems and disruptions to service, working with transformers, engineering the electrical protection and control circuits that handles the flow of power, and dealing with acceptance testing of equipment, failures of equipment and analysis of system disturbances.

Role and Scope of Position:

Plans, develops, schedules, and performs engineering assignments related to the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of gas distribution and pressure regulating systems, including major/complex projects. Analyzes, recommends and develops specific projects for implementation. Assumes supervisory on-call assignments as required. Supports values and commitment to Eversource’s mission, strategy and values.

  • The Senior Engineer ( Field Communications / Telecom Services) is responsible for establishing and maintaining the proper operation of Eversource telecommunication system assets used for voice and data communications.One position at the Senior Engineer level in the Telecommunication Services group has been recommended for immediate filling by the Field Engineering/Field Communications management team. We strongly recommend the position be filled as soon as possible so that the following project and maintenance responsibilities can be maintained going forward:

 Perform engineering and maintenance activities necessary for the proper operation of the Eversource Transmission, Distribution and Gas SCADA communication network in Connecticut and Western Massachusetts. This is a MPLS based system that allows simultaneous connectivity between remote terminal units (RTUs) and multiple host computer systems.

 Perform engineering and maintenance activities necessary for the proper operation of the Eversource telecommunication infrastructure that provides interfacility communications between datacenters, operation centers (CONVEX, SOCs, EOCs), area work centers, substations and remote telecommunication facilities. This infrastructure consists of optical and microwave terminals that provide bulk transport of higher-level services such as voice, corporate data, security, radio control, telemetry and SCADA.

 Maintain and deploy Emergency Preparedness (EP) assets including the Mobile Response Centers, Storm Trailers, Portable/mobile VSAT satellite systems, Satellite phones, emergency generators and all other systems and assets as needed.

 Perform engineering and maintenance activities necessary for the proper operation of the optical fiber infrastructure used by Eversource throughout Connecticut and Western Massachusetts. The fiber plant is used extensively between substations and other facilities to support transmission line protection, voice, data and corporate applications.

 Perform engineering and maintenance activities necessary to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory and operational entities including, but not limited to NERC, FCC, FAA, OSHA, CONVEX, ISO New England by maintaining Eversource and STN assets that provide intra and intercompany ties throughout New England. The extended infrastructure allows ISO-NE, CONVEX and other LCC’s to monitor regional tie lines, establishes diverse communication paths to control centers, substations and generators and maintain compliance with emergency voltage reduction requirements for Connecticut and Western Massachusetts Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Experience:

  • Five plus years related experience required

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Working Conditions:

  • Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.

  • Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.Physical Aspects:

  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry 50 pounds of equipment.

  • Ability to work in groups to lift and carry loads in excess of 50 pounds.
  • Ability to walk for prolonged distances on uneven ground and up hills during various weather conditions to access remote telecommunication facilities.
