Position Overview

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The University College provides Academic Advising, Testing, Developmental and Supplemental Learning, and Student-Athlete Academic Support services that ensure the successful transition of first- and second-year students into the University to put them on track toward graduation in four years.

Primary Purpose of Position

The Academic Advisor provides academic advisement to NCCU’s University College constituents (first year students, sophomores and transfer students) through one-on-one meetings, workshops, and presentations regarding majors, degree requirements, academic progress, and selection of courses for future semesters. This position assesses individual student situations and circumstances, to create, implement and monitor students’ academic progression, retention, and holistic development with the support of internal/external organizations and resources that meet student needs.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Excellent organizational and communication skills. Familiarity with and appreciation for the mission and structure of NCCU programs and curricula. Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with students, supervisors, and colleagues.

Minimum Education/Experience

Master’s degree in education, counseling, or similar related field required, with three (3) to five (5) years’ experience in higher education to include excellent advising preferred.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

Function Administrative

Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

Provide academic advisement to NCCU’s University College constituents (first year students, sophomores and transfer students) through one-on-one meetings, workshops, and presentations regarding majors, degree requirements, academic progress, and selection of courses for future semesters. Meet with advisees throughout the semester to develop a course schedule for and with each student and ensure their understanding of academic standards, policies, programs, and student information systems available to facilitate their success. Utilizes advising technology tools to ensure accurate record keeping and efficient management of student information.

Function Administrative

Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

Participate in campus programming and recruiting activities for prospective students and parents and assist with tasks related to planning and implementing the utilization of academic advising. Partner with academic departments and student services in developing and implementing proactive retention strategies for at-risk students.

Participate in campus programming and recruiting activities for prospective students and parents and assist with tasks related to planning and implementing the advising program. Partner with academic departments and student services. Assist the Associate Dean in developing and implementing proactive retention strategies for at-risk students and implementing general advising best practices. Attend departmental meetings and perform other related duties as assigned. Occasional work may be required beyond normal working hours.

Function Administrative

Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

Provides intervention to students identified as high risk based on early alert mechanism including early warning and mid-term reporting. Conducts semester final grade reviews to ensure that students’ progress adequately in their curriculum plan and make necessary schedule adjustments and recommendations.

Serves on committees as assigned by Associate Dean and/or Advising Coordinator. Attend departmental meetings and perform other related duties as assigned.
