Position:       Gardener 

Location:        Fordhook Farm, Doylestown, PA

Job Summary: 

This full-time position is responsible for assisting the Head Gardener and will actively participate in the daily care and maintenance of gardens and grounds of Fordhook Farm. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support with the planting, watering, and maintenance of established annual and perennial gardens 

  • Assist with routine spraying of herbicides, fungicides, pesticides, and insecticides as requested  

  • Keep clear records of spraying schedules and uses 

  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices. 

  • Facilitate irrigation installation in the established gardens 

  • Assist with tree maintenance and care 

  • Participate in organizing public and private events 

  • Enroll in webinars and off-site training in horticulture related subjects 

  • Assist photography and product managers as needed 

  • Assists in the work direction and on-the-job training of seasonal employees / interns. 

  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned 

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ years' experience in the horticulture industry 

  • Previous experience in a similar role is preferred 

  • In-depth knowledge of gardening and techniques 

     

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Degree in Horticulture, Plant Science or related majors preferred but experienced gardeners welcome to apply 

  • Experience with use of hand tools, leaf blowers, and other equipment as needed 

  • Plant ID required 

  • Ability to lift to 50 pounds 

  • Ability to bend and stand on a continual basis 

  • Ability to perform outdoor work in all weather conditions 

  • Able to work overtime and weekends during watering seasons and events 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication 

  • Familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint 

  • Excellent organizational skills 

  • Ability to adapt to change, take initiative and solve problems independently 

  • Capable to work independently as well as part of a team 

  • The desire to work, learn, and be a part of Burpee seed innovations! 

  • Valid driver’s license 

     

    Critical Skills:

  • Ability to work well both as part of a team and with minimal supervision 

  • Able to obtain Private Pesticide Applicators License within a year of employment
