Description

Under general supervision, at a transportation terminal or Service Provider facility, instruct Paratransit Bus Operatorsindividually or in small groups in the operation and care of transportation equipment and in the methods of providing good customer service, particularly training in disability awareness and sensitivity and the appropriate passenger assistance techniques

Examples of Duties

  • Instruct individuals or small groups to operate transportation equipment by accompanying them on practice runs.

  • Provide instructions on the approved methods of maintaining proper public relations.

  • Explain and demonstrate the construction, function, and coordination of transportation equipment and the accessibility features of the vehicle.

  • Explain the cause of mechanical failures, the requirements when performing a proper pre-trip inspection, and the results of equipment abuse.

  • Assist in preparing programs for instructing personnel and classes in safety and defensive driving techniques.

  • Instructs Commercial Driver License classes, where applicable.

  • Certify qualified participants.

  • Read and interpret the driver manifest

  • Explain the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as it relates to the provision of complementary paratransit services and the DDOT Paratransit Rider’s Guide.

  • Prepare reports on investigations of abuse of equipment and complaints.

  • Review driver accident records, and recommend re-training for operators with unsatisfactory performance records.

  • Enter coded transportation equipment accident and incident information into computer terminals, and complete and maintain a variety of training-related forms.

  • Compile and maintain records of instruction and prepare reports.

  • Instruct professional development training in customer service, conflict resolution, sexual harassment, ethics, and workplace violence.

  • Instruct professional development training in on-time performance, disability awareness, and sensitivity, assistance techniques (including the use of accessibility equipment)

  • Investigate and resolve customer service complaints.

  • Monitors service delivery upon request.

  • Provides remedial/refresher training where indicated/when required.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or G.E.D.

  • Two (2) years of experience in paratransit bus operations.

  • One (1) year of experience in providing service monitoring and/or orienting assigned paratransit bus operators in regularly scheduled service.

  • Knowledge of the location of streets and buildings in the Detroit area.

  • Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and construction of transportation equipment.

  • Knowledge of traffic rules and regulations.

  • Skill in instructing and training others.

  • Skill in the use of personal computers and standard office software.

  • Skill in utilizing mechanical aptitude.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.

  • Ability to operate transit equipment.

  • Ability to interact effectively with the public and others with tact and diplomacy.

Supplemental Information

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Special Requirements:

  • Valid State of Michigan Chauffeur’s License with class 3 endorsement, or Group B Commercial Driver License with P(Passenger) and airbrake endorsements required.

  • Candidates considered for placement in this classification may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation based on the requirements of the position.

Physical Demands

The employee generally remains in a stationary position for an extended period operating standard office equipment which may include computers, telephones, photocopiers, and fax machines. The employee is expected to move about to accomplish tasks such as opening file cabinets and transferring files. Must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry up to(x) pounds.

Work Environment

Work is performed primarily in an office environment. Some work requires travel to meetings, conferences, and other worksites with exposure to seasonal weather conditions.

This plan is provided by Blue Care Network of Michigan and utilizes their PCP Focus Network. This plan provides you with the opportunity to receive an enhanced level of benefits and pay less out of your paycheck for your medical plan. There are two important requirements that you should consider and understand if you should decide to enroll in this plan. You will have to choose a primary care physician that serves within the PCP Focus network. This primary care physician coordinates your care. The network includes over 22,000 Primary Care Physicians. There are also Wellness Requirements that you (the subscriber) must meet in order to remain in the enhanced level of benefit.

Administrative Special Services Staff (Exempt) are eligible for the following benefits:

  • CURRENT SICK LEAVE – Granted (3) months of continuous service. (1) day per month, not to exceed (12) days per year.

  • VACATION – Granted (1) day per pay period, not to exceed 20 days per fiscal year

  • PAID HOLIDAYS – Granted if paid for 600 straight time hours in the (12) months prior to the holiday

  • MILEAGE REIMBURSEMENT - Granted on same basis as regular employees.

  • WORKERS COMPENSATION – Covered by applicable laws.

  • UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION - Covered by applicable laws.

  • HOSPITALIZATION – You are eligible to purchase healthcare benefits for yourself and your dependents under a group rate. You will be responsible for the full premium, no employer contribution will be applied. Please review the Health Care Plan Options Booklet for more detailed information.

  • This position is not eligible for the City Pension Plan, dental, vision, optical, death, life, disability, funeral, reserve sick or jury duty.

Administrative Special Services Staff (Non-Exempt) are eligible for the following benefits:

  • CURRENT SICK LEAVE – Granted (3) months of continuous service. (1) Day per month, not to exceed (12) days per year.
