Job Description

This is a non-merit position, candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section.

Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.

Only applicants who meet the Minimum Qualification Requirements and meet all selective requirements (listed below) will be placed on the eligible list.

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services’ (Iowa HHS) Division of Public Health is seeking a State Public Health Veterinarian to Support and advise the State Epidemiologist and State Medical Director on state-wide disease surveillance, outbreak detection, investigation, and follow-up on animal diseases..

Responsibilities:

  • Advise agency leadership during animal disease outbreaks to protect public health.

  • Assess trends of diseases, risk factors for health events, effectiveness of prevention and control efforts, and implement appropriate modifications to improve the health of Iowans.

  • Advise, provide guidance, and support the One Health Initiative for Iowa HHS.

    Requirements:

  • Provide 24/7 epidemiological expertise on animal health and agricultural related issues.

  • Serve as the veterinary epidemiology liaison for the state with key national partners including the CDC, USDA, FDA and other federal agencies.

    Applicant will be required to complete a background check to be considered for this position.

Selectives

535 Public Health:

6 months experience, 12 semester hours, or a combination of both related to improving, maintaining, and protecting the general condition of health within society, either on a personal, institutional, organizational, or community basis. Experience may be gained from direct provision of health care or from other ancillary programs and support mechanisms such as government public health departments.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet all of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1) Licensure as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) in the State of Iowa; and

2) Graduation from an accredited college or university with a graduate degree in public health with at least two courses related to the principles and practice of epidemiology.
