CDOT has a vacancy for a Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic Supervisor operating out of Aurora, CO and serving the Metro Denver area.

If so, come join CDOT as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. We're looking for someone who likes to mentor a team to take apart equipment, figure out what is wrong, and put it back in working order!

Base pay for this position is typically between $2,796 - $2,972/biweekly ($72,708 - $77,292/annually). There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year. This location is also eligible for an additional $1000/month housing stipend, resulting in total pay of $84,708 - $89,292/annually.

Description of Job

This Equipment Mechanic IV position is a supervisory position located in the Region 1 Section 5 Maintenance section located in Aurora, Colorado. As the Equipment Mechanic IV you will supervise and assist field mechanics. You will establish work schedules and priorities on equipment and monitor completeness of work. You will ensure that safety and industry workmanship standards are followed in the shop. You will be responsible for providing technical assistance to mechanics, maintaining an inventory of supplies and equipment, and preparing reports of shop activities.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Supervise, coordinate and assist eight (8) field mechanics in the Denver Metro area on all types of mechanical work, providing guidance, technical support, and direction; inspect quality of work after completion;

  • Rebuild, repair, inspect, diagnose, and maintain heavy and specialized equipment, such as trucks, loaders, dozers, motor graders, lay down machines and all other asphalt equipment, snow removal equipment, mowers, construction equipment and attachments;

  • Monitor and assign equipment and truck inspections, DOT inspection and annual inspections on seasonal equipment;

  • Diagnose defects in motorized equipment, estimate time and materials needed, make cost estimates and order correct parts; verify billings and invoices for accuracy;

  • Perform maintenance on various small engines, pumps, and hand tools;

  • Keep up to date on current equipment and technical knowledge in order to be able to work on all systems such as air, hydraulics, fuel, coolant, electric, and electronics, including major components of power and drive trains;

  • Oversee preventative maintenance and ensure compliance with guidelines;

  • Monitor SAP notifications, work orders, and reports; assist field team with input of time and repair codes into SAP; enter monthly meter readings from State Fleet Management into CDOT systems;

  • Coordinate with the shop manager to anticipate equipment and tools needed to keep field equipment operational;

  • Assist the shop supervisor in ordering equipment and scheduling vendors; schedule equipment repairs, annual inspections, preventative maintenance, paint-body repairs, new vehicle set-up, job assignments of mechanics, shop space, and training for shop personnel;

  • Implement, review, and sign Performance Management plans and evaluations; approve leave requests; mediate as necessary to resolve issues including interpersonal conflicts and informal grievances;

  • Assist in conducting monthly safety and general information meetings;

  • Other job duties as assigned.

    Work Environment:

  • Primarily 7:00 am – 3:30 pm work hours, Monday-Friday

  • Infrequent overtime

  • Infrequent travel required during work hours for meetings and training

  • Occasional overnight travel 1-3 times a year throughout Colorado

  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles in order to test drive equipment

  • May be required to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime including weekends and holidays

  • Some on-call time is required

  • Must provide the supervisor with a telephone number where you can be reached for the purpose of responding to an emergency

  • Required to lift up to 70 lbs.

  • Required to bend, kneel, climb in/out of trucks when maintaining and repairing equipment

  • Must be able to read, understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions in English

  • May be required to work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions for long periods of time – hot and cold

  • Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dusts, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes, and skin

  • Must be able to hear and communicate via cell phone and state radio to relay information and respond to field calls

  • Required to use computers to accomplish everyday work duties

  • This position is required to have a Colorado Commercial Driver's License Class A or B with no restrictions on air brakes

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Experience Only:

Seven (7) years of relevant experience in automotive AND heavy equipment repair, with at least three (3) years of experience must be with the diagnosis and repair of heavy diesel equipment such as 10-ton double axle snowplows, tractor-trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines and/or 15' mower tractors.

OR

Education and Experience:

A total of seven (7) years of education and experience in any combination of the following:

  • Automotive AND heavy equipment repair, with at least three (3) years of experience must be with the diagnosis and repair of heavy diesel equipment such as 10-ton double axle snowplows, tractor-trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines and/or 15' mower tractors.

  • Education in automotive or diesel equipment or a formalized apprenticeship program. (A copy of the transcript must be provided with the application materials.)

    Conditions of Employment

  • A current valid Commercial Driver's License Class A or B with no restrictions on air brakes that allows operation in Colorado.

  • May be required to pass a controlled substance test (i.e., drug test), and DOT physical through our medical provider.

    Preferred Qualifications

    The exceptional applicant will possess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following:

  • Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section.

  • Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position.

  • Extensive experience with troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of automotive and heavy-duty diesel vehicles and equipment. Experience with equipment up to 10 tons is highly desirable.

  • Medium/Heavy truck ASE Certifications in Diesel Engine, Drive Trains, Brakes, Suspension and Steering, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating, Ventilation, and A/C is preferred.

  • Effective interpersonal and customer service skills.

  • Self-starter and motivated to accomplish assigned tasks.

  • Ability to work effectively in both independent and team situations.

  • Excellent leadership and supervisory skills;

  • Ability to teach and mentor employees to successfully accomplish their job responsibilities;

  • Ability to negotiate mutually acceptable solutions and build consensus through give and take;

  • Strong time and project management skills, including prioritization and multi-tasking ability;

  • Strong attention to technical detail and accuracy.

  • Must have knowledge and know-how to use computers for vehicle diagnosing, data input, record keeping and email, and have the ability to quickly learn other software.
