Design Studies Engineer (AC Interference) – Senior Level

POWER Engineers, Member of WSP. is seeking a Senior Design Studies Engineer with an emphasis on AC Interference. This position is posted in multiple POWER office locations with the ability to work remotely from a mutually acceptable location (please note in the application questions where you prefer to be located).

Roles and Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be responsible for successful completion of assigned projects and for maintaining and improving customer relationships. Completion of these functions requires technical competence in primary production roles as well as competence in working with customers and mentoring team members assigned to projects. This engineer will develop and implement strategies to minimize electromagnetic interference (EMI) between transmission lines and railways or pipelines. They will conduct detailed assessments of electromagnetic fields (EMF) and their potential interference with signaling and rail voltage hazards. They’ll design mitigation systems to protect railway and pipeline infrastructure from unwanted electrical currents and transferred voltages using specialized tools and methodologies to evaluate EMI effects. They’ll also provide technical support for rail and pipeline systems affected by AC interference.

Success in this engineering position requires an individual who can participate in the proposal writing process and enjoys customer contact to assist in developing new opportunities for POWER. This person must be able to self-manage, with a strong conceptualization ability and strong interpersonal communication and organizational skills, including the capability to explain complex technical issues at a variety of levels to decision-makers and project teams. The successful applicant must be willing to mentor less experienced engineers and contribute to training material.

Required Education/Experience

  • A Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) is required

  • Ten (10) years of industry experience in electromagnetic compatibility analysis

  • Strong knowledge of railroad signaling systems, electromagnetic fields, interference, and compatibility principles

  • Ability to conduct thorough interference assessments and develop effective mitigation strategies

  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills including proposal writing, report writing, and other technical writing

  • Experience with CDEGS/HIFREQ or equivalent software package

  • Familiarity with EMC standards and safety regulations

  • Proficiency in identifying and resolving complex interference issues

Desired Education/Experience:

  • Power Systems focused MSEE or PhD

  • PE or equivalent

  • Extensive experience with high voltage power systems

  • Ability to perform additional design studies such as insulation coordination, TRV analysis, breaker rating studies, transposition studies, delayed zero crossing, neutral reactor sizing, NESC clearance studies, minimum approach distance studies, phase conductor sizing/selection, optical shield wire sizing, lighting performance prediction, corona performance prediction, corrosion analysis and mitigation, finite element electric/magnetic field analysis, and/or resonance studies

  • Experience in customer focused engineering projects in the technical areas above

  • Experience with Electromagnetic Transient software packages (e.g. ATP, PSCAD, EMTP, etc.)

Base Salary Range: $105,000.00 - $180,000.00 per year

The range for this position is being displayed in compliance with all state and local regulations. Salaries are set based on a number of factors to include an individual's job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and education. This means that no two candidates are alike. The range provided above does not include additional compensation such as bonus, health benefits, vacation, 401(k) match, etc.
