Stetson University Public Safety Officer - Level II MT9879 in DeLand, Florida

Under the general oversight of the assigned shift Sergeant, the Public Safety Officer performs routine policy enforcement and security work in the protection of people and in the safeguarding of university property. The Public Safety Officer secures assigned property against possible loss or damage and is charged with ensuring the safety of all individuals on campus.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Employment duties will include, but not be limited to:

  • Patrol/make rounds of the assigned area by foot or vehicle; watch for unauthorized persons or activities; report unusual instances to shift Sergeant; call police for assistance if necessary

  • Assist with traffic directions and parking for special details

  • Provide University information to Stetson faculty, staff, and visitors

  • Provide escort to Stetson community members to and from buildings and parking lots as needed

  • Maintain lost and found services

  • Check for safety, fire, and/or security hazards

  • Monitor fire and security alarms

  • Lock and unlock facilities as requested by an authorized person(s)

  • Prepare reports; issue traffic citations; provide disaster and emergency evaluation and management; relieve dispatcher when necessary

  • Perform some minor building maintenance tasks, i.e., unstopping commodes, securing broken windows, turning off water, and resetting 110-volt electric circuit breakers

  • Respond to various types of building and equipment alarms, coordinating with the local Fire and Police Departments as they respond

  • Work on a rotating shift basis, which includes the ability to work occasional overtime and a 24-hour emergency on-call status

  • Perform similar and other position-related work as requested

  • Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and concise written reports in English

  • Skill in the application of proper safety precautions

  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors with direct exposure to weather, heat, humidity, and cold

  • Position duties necessitate the physical ability to endure standing and/or walking for long periods, stair climbing, bending, stooping, and manual dexterity, and lifting up to fifty pounds

  • Perceptual demands for sound, form, depth

Required Experience

  • High school diploma or GED

  • One (1) year of law enforcement or security experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience

  • Must possess a “Class D” security license with the State of Florida or be willing to pursue and secure such certification (State of Florida Chapter 493)

    Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record as determined by the University’s auto insurance carrier.
