WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW (Job Overview):

Perform high complexity testing on donor and patient samples. Resolve histocompatibility problems; provide intermediate reference and consultation services to hospitals and transfusion services. Perform automated and manual HLA testing procedures on donor and/or patient samples. Adhere to explicit standard operating procedures and interpret test results in accordance with the applicable regulatory requirements. Fully proficient, skilled and trained in all HLA Technologist responsibilities with ability to work independently meeting performance and productivity standards. Provide support, development and/or technical resource to internal or external customers. Perform on-call duties as required. Must maintain state or board certification, if applicable, and attend continuing education programs. Performs work in compliance with accrediting agency standards. Provide support, development and/or leadership guidance to all volunteers. Perform all duties and responsibilities in compliance with standard operating procedures and other applicable Federal, State and local regulations. Provides support, development and/or leadership guidance to all volunteers.

WHERE YOUR CAREER IS A FORCE FOR GOOD (Key Responsibilities):

  • Perform serologic, molecular and immunologic procedures that may include, but are not limited to, DNA extraction, PCR amplification, sequence-based typing, STR analysis, probe hybridization/detection, cytotoxic crossmatching, antibody screening/identification by Luminex and/or ELISA assays and other procedures as defined. Recognize testing irregularities, identify the cause, determine the solution and resolve the problem or refer it to the appropriate level. May perform special testing. Perform and review quality control as directed.

  • Review and interpret final results; prepare and may review final reports, written or electronic. Maintain, edit and review computer and manual records to assure accurate record keeping. Maintain accurate, legible and complete records. Maintain an orderly workspace.

  • Evaluate, validate and implement new laboratory techniques and/or procedures. Assist in writing new procedures. Train, retrain and contribute input into competency assessments of staff.

  • Participate in working on special projects assigned and be responsible to analyze and summarize testing data.

  • Communicate with hospital or transfusion facility personnel to report patient findings and/or receive orders. May consult and communicate with personnel at other medical facilities to facilitate resolutions to problems and address the needs of customers both internal and external.

  • Perform duties associated with receipt, coordination, shipment and transport of donor and patient blood samples to include ordering, receiving, inspection and preparation of supplies and reagents.

  • Perform daily equipment maintenance checks as directed. Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, repair/vendor communication and validation of laboratory equipment and software maintenance.

• Pay Information: starting at $40/hr depending on experience

  • Shift Information: Monday - Friday 10am - 6:30pm, one Saturday rotation a month, holiday rotation

    WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED (Minimum Qualifications):

  • Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a biological science or chemistry or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Technologist (MT), Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) or equivalent certification. CHT(ABHI) or CHS(ABHI) certification or in the process of pursuing is preferred. Licensure if required by state.

  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years related experience. Preferentially, this should include either 5 years of blood banking, HLA or molecular laboratory experience or 2 years of American Red Cross histocompatibility experience.

  • Skills & Abilities: Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work on a team. Provide training and guidance to new technologists and technicians. Must possess critical-thinking skills and attention to detail. Promotes quality-driven work environment.
