This is an exempt level position.

Position Summary

We are seeking a Principal Scientist to lead to extend the ingredient structure-function capability of our product portfolio in wide application areas. This scientist will be an integral member of the Material Science Delivery Technology team and will collaborate with groups across ADM Research to advance the ingredient portfolio across the areas of sustainable materials platform and Human Nutrition.

This position is in the Material Science Delivery Technology Team dedicated to identify and support opportunities through basic scientific research and early discovery of ingredient functionality for diverse business areas (agricultural specialties; home and personal care; coatings). The incumbent will be in charge of contributing to delivering on a variety of cross-functional projects of innovative nature, to deliver value to the company and end consumers.

This person will be a key member of the technical team. The scope of the role will include leading the design, and execution of technical work plan with excellence, playing at interfaces with different ingredient science and business platforms to drive strategic alignment and technical work plan to deliver success.

Job Responsibilities

  • Strong background in ingredient science and their applications across both food and non-food areas

  • Material Characterization experience of food ingredients such as lipids, protein, sweeteners, emulsifiers, hydrocolloids and carbohydrates

  • Technical understanding of related ingredient chemistry and applying the scientific principles to food and non-food areas

  • Experience with physical and chemical laboratory testing techniques such as particle size analyzer, dispersion, wetting, rheology and method development of evolving application areas

  • Experience in product development utilizing synergies in ingredient science including colloids and interfacial science

  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision as a member of a multidisciplinary research team;

  • Ability to solve complex problems through original thinking and application of scientific principles

  • Work Performance: Successfully summarizes data and analyzes results; formulates conclusions and reviews progress with supervisor.

  • Ability to multi-task and handle constantly evolving objectives and approaches of an innovative company.

  • Provide technical leadership to be a problem solver and support new products and new technology evaluation.

  • Design experiments to promote the understanding of ingredients and their interaction in food applications at molecular level

  • Collaborate with other research divisions at technical level to develop strong understanding of ingredients and applications

  • Work with cross-functional teams such as food, feed & industrial divisions at all capacities including customers, business managers and operations.

  • Identifies and develops new innovative technologies and have strong intellectual curiosity to keep abreast of IP and literature

  • A strong team player both as team member and as project lead across multiple projects

  • Lead projects for diverse technical teams utilizing gated project management tools

  • Report on status of research activities through verbal updates, written reports, and presentations

  • Ensure lab technicians, contract employees, and other coworkers follow ADM laboratory standards

  • Participate in safety reviews with colleagues on a variety of projects

Technical Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry or Food Science or related field of study with at least 5-10 years of experience in academic/industry environment.

  • Strong knowledge in physical chemistry and adapting scientific principles understand the ingredients science and ingredient compatibilities

  • Experienced in characterization methods for the food ingredients (emulsifiers, carbohydrates, sweeteners, proteins, lipids) for food and non-food applications.

  • Experience in understanding synergy in ingredient functionality is a major plus
