BlueHalo Associate Scientist - Biomaterials in DAYTON, Ohio

OVERVIEW

BlueHalo is seeking to develop new technologies in the sphere of biomaterials with an emphasis on biomaterials for infrastructure development, for example biocement based on microbially-induced calcite precipitation.  We have assembled a multi-disciplinary team and are looking for additional help in devising and conducting experiments that advance our knowledge and ultimately deliver new concepts or products for a range of infrastructure applications.  The successful applicant will become part of a group operating within the Biological Materials and Processing Research Team located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, OH.  There is a potential to grow into other roles within this team, contributing on a variety of projects within the space of biomaterials.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Prototyping to refine biomaterial production techniques and formulations.
  • Conducting experimental campaigns on biomaterial specimens (extensive mechanical testing, chemical/biochemical testing, biological testing.)
  • As a member of a team, devising experimental plans based on accumulating results, scientific literature, or first principles.
  • Documentation of standard operating procedures, test protocols, and experimental results.
  • Presentation of work products at internal and external scientific meetings.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS YOU WILL BRING
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant discipline (bioengineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, or another related field).
  • 2 to 4 years experience, or Master's Degree with 0-2 years experience.
  • Experience working with laboratory chemicals.
  • Willingness to learn new techniques and to conduct extensive experimental campaigns, both independently at times but with close supervision at other times.

Desired qualifications:

  • Experience with biomaterial characterization tools (load testing, chemical analysis, rheology, mass spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy or transmission electron microscopy, etc.).
  • Experience with design of experiments, AI/ML, or process optimization generally.
  • Experience with spray-drying.
  • Experience working with soils; knowledge of soil physics; biological interfaces with soils.
  • Experience with microbial fermentation.
