Virginia State Job Bank Systems Engineer, Senior (SPY-6 Safety) in Dahlgren, Virginia

BCI has an opening for (1) full-time Senior Systems (Safety) Engineer in direct support of SPY-6 Radar System Safety Program who will become part of the BCI Systems Safety Engineering group. This group provides specific, tailored, Warfare System and System Safety Engineering support to several Coast Guard, Naval Sea Systems Command, Joint, and Naval Air Systems engineering, program acquisition and fleet support activities. The successful candidate must be an energetic self-starter, able to articulate complex technical issues in a clear, concise, understandable manner in verbal and written formats, work productively independently and in team environments, meet deadlines, and perform multiple tasks in parallel.

Experience Required:

This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering, scientific, business or technical discipline or military operational experience at the E6 level or higher. 15+ years of general operational experience in systems engineering for DoD weapon systems programs, OR 15 years' combination US Navy, civil service, or industry experience in the description of duties is required. Five (5) years of specialized experience in systems safety in support of AEGIS, SSDS, small combatants, submarines, land based test sites or some combination of those platforms. Candidates must have skills supporting routine engineering tasks in system safety including hazard analysis, probability and severity assessments, design and architecture analysis and the generation of system safety reports / documentation. Demonstrated experience in the development and coordination of presentations to support the Weapon System Explosives Safety Review Board and its Technical Panels, Laser Safety Review Board, and the Department of Defense and the Department of Navy Insensitive Munitions Reviews is also required. Experience with radar systems such as AN/SPS-48 (Series), SPY-1, Multi-Mission Radar (MMR), Dual Band Radar (DBR), and Enterprise Air Surveillance Radar (EASR) is preferred. Two (2) years' experience with Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required.

Description of Duties:

Full-time member of the SPY-6 Systems Safety Program that executes analyses and assessments of system level safety risks with responsibilities tailored to provide direct technical, operational and engineering support to the Principal for Safety.

This includes at a high level:

  • Developing and maintaining currency and understanding of system technical details;
  • Understanding relevant safety issues;
  • Participating in engineering and safety reviews;
  • Evaluating and editing risk assessment studies and analyses;
  • Preparing reports and briefs, and presenting such materials to formal boards including SSSTRP and WSESRB;
  • Analyzing and developing System Safety Plans, Safety Management Plans, hardware and software changes/issues affecting systems safety; and
  • Analyzing safety test documentation/plans.

Travel: Travel is required up to 5-10% as part of assigned tasking. There will be trips to the Washington, DC area, Wallops Island, Va, with possible brief trips to other states.
