Description
The Safety and Security Officer enforces College parking and traffic regulations, provides directions and information, and assists students, faculty, staff and visitors to campus by providing directions, answering questions, completing incident reports, and responding to concerns, all while providing good customer service with timely and friendly responses. In addition, the Safety and Security Officer, conducts regular vehicular and foot patrols and responds to emergency and non-emergency situations. The officer will provide guidance and direction to the contracted security officer when relevant. This position is 15-20 hours/week Monday-Friday between the hours of 7am-3pm,
Job Duties
Demonstrates IWCC’s core mission, vision and values
Maintain a safe and secure campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors by regularly patrolling the campus primarily on foot but also in a patrol vehicle.
Promote a positive image of the College by providing exceptional, friendly, and helpful customer service to students, staff, faculty, and visitors.
Respond to phone calls and texts in a prompt and friendly manner.
Respond to emergency and non-emergency situations on campus promptly and appropriately; must know, understand, and execute emergency response to a variety of situations, including weather and fire; must know, understand, and facilitate Standard Response Protocol (SRP) for an active shooter or other campus emergencies
Respond to violations of college policies and regulations in an appropriate manner, and then report such violations to the Director of Safety and Security via an incident report; provide proactive and friendly service to help people avoid violations whenever possible; apply appropriate and sanctioned techniques to diffuse and de-escalate situations when such occasions arise.
Observe and respond, when necessary, to unauthorized or suspicious persons or activities within the campus community.
Enforce College parking and traffic regulations, which includes issuing traffic and parking citations.
Check doors and locks for proper operation; secure and lock/unlock buildings as directed; unlock office doors at the request of faculty and staff members.
Conduct area checks, visual surveys, and patrol for potentially dangerous or unsafe areas, building, or conditions. (e.g., inoperative lighting, unlocked doors, insecure stairway railing, etc.), routinely inspect AED’s, identifying hazards and making on-the-spot corrections if possible or reporting the conditions to the appropriate person/department.
Accurately and professionally document campus incidents involving possible criminal activity and other daily activities on both an incident and daily log activity report
Investigate incidents and motor vehicle accidents on the camera system to determine what happen
Respond to fire panel system alarms and elevator problems
Work effectively and efficiently with outside Law Enforcement and Fire Officials
Provide escorts to any person on campus who requests one
Jump start vehicles with a power pack and assist stranded motorist
Document all lost and found property. Also, the release of said property to the correct owner
Assist the HR Director and Vice President of Safety and Security with potentially volatile situations involving both employees and prospective employees
Provide assistance as requested with any terminated employee to ensure they leave the college premises in a prompt and orderly manner
Comprehends and understands the colleges parking rules and regulations
Comprehends and understands the safety and security training manual
The ability to pass a background check
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required; some college is beneficial and a plus
Able to respectfully follow directives and orders from supervisors
Experience with Standard Response Protocol (SRP) active shooter response plans is beneficial
Experience or background in law enforcement and/or security work is beneficial
Experience with camera surveillance systems is beneficial
Experience with lost and found property is beneficial
Experience that demonstrates sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and disabled backgrounds of community college students.
Experience with an integrated parking program with computer generated citations/parking permits is beneficial
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to articulate in both small and large group settings and with diverse groups of people including co-workers, students, business contacts and at various levels from front-line to administration
Strong organizational skills including the ability to multi-task, to meet deadlines, to maintain and access paper and electronic files, to produce error-free final products, and to manage time and output
Excellent customer service skills required with the ability to deescalate situations
Proficient use of Microsoft Office products including outlook and word.
Ability to read, write and speak English fluently
Ability to type on the computer an articulate and complete incident report
Professional in communications, appearance, relationships, positive attitude and responsiveness
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality at all times
Self-starter with the ability to perform with little or no direct supervision
Training Requirements:
Trained in basic first aid, CPR, and AED or able to acquire these skills
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, and be insurable
Physical Demands
Heavy work (lift 30-50 lbs.)
The employee frequently is required to sit and stand for extended periods of time and use hands to operate computer keyboard, telephone and basic office equipment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear
