Job Summary

The VP Corporate Safety and Health, Technical Training (Distribution), and Human Performance is responsible for the strategic oversight and continuous improvement of the company's safety and health initiatives, distribution technical training programs, and human performance across the company. This role will ensure compliance with regulatory standards while fostering a strong safety culture, serving Operating Companies and AEP Transmission as key customers.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

Safety and Health:

  • Provide direction for the continuous improvement of health, safety, and sustainability initiatives.

  • Supervise the development, implementation, and management of regulatory compliance systems and reporting procedures.

  • Ensure effective implementation of safety and health programs in compliance with OSHA, MSHA, and other regulations, tailored to the needs of Operating Companies and AEP Transmission.

  • Develop and lead strategic efforts that aim to reduce occupational injuries and illnesses consistently across the enterprise.

  • Oversee the corporate safety and health technology platforms to enable, share and interpret data visualization tools for leading and lagging safety performance indicators.

  • Develop and lead safety and health policies and procedures designed for comprehension and scalability.

  • Regularly monitor safety performance metrics, prepare reports and interpret results for executive leadership.

  • Foster of culture of safety and health excellence through collaboration, learning opportunities and employee participation at all levels of the enterprise.

  • Develop and lead processes that align corporate safety operations with operating companies’ goals and objectives.

  • Identify, lead and implement procedures through collaboration with business unit leaders that integrate production, human performance and safe behaviors into daily operations.

Technical Training (Distribution):

  • Reimagine and manage technical training programs for Distribution, ensuring apprentices are effectively trained to work safely and serve customers.

  • Build a best-in-class training capability and experience for all participants, ensuring that training meets the highest industry standards.

  • Propose innovative training methods weaving together human performance fundamentals, current best in class safety practices throughout the program and establish governance processes for program materials.

  • Collaborate with the Safety Leadership team to ensure all training programs prioritize safety and meet the specific needs of key customers.

  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement by ensuring standard procedures are in place to drive consistency and efficiency in running the training centers.

  • Lead the development of technical training processes that integrate technical skills and productivity with safety and health practices while ensuring knowledge retention and prolonged proficiency.

  • Maintain Department of Labor registered apprenticeship status in good standing.

  • Manage technical training budget within approved scope.

Human Performance:

  • Utilize data-driven approaches to identify opportunities for human performance improvement and prevent injuries through root cause analysis.

  • Develop a methodology for compiling statistical data on organizational accident experiences, including KPIs and leading indicators.

  • Develop processes to equip teams and employees with human performance tools to drive improvement and organizational performance.

  • Lead the Human Performance ‘Journey to Excellence’ while identifying key principles, error precursors and HP tools to be implemented across the enterprise.

Leadership and Collaboration:

  • Demonstrate visionary leadership in setting effective strategies aimed at achieving zero harm.

  • Foster collaborative partnerships with Distribution leadership teams, Operating Companies and their generation facilities and AEP Transmission.

  • Direct change management processes and support human performance improvement initiatives.

  • Work closely with other departments, business units and operating companies to integrate consistent safety practices into all aspects of operation.

  • Develop and articulate a clear vision for the organization that aligns with overall strategic goals.

  • Build and lead high-performing teams, promoting collaboration and fostering a positive work environment.

  • Lead organizational change initiatives while guiding teams through transition and implementation of critical processes.

  • Establish clear metrics to drive accountability.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

  • Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years in the utility industry with operational experience or safety and health background.

  • Proven experience in leading teams, driving operational excellence, and managing large-scale projects.

Other Requirements:

  • Approximately 40% travel required.

  • Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills.

Compensation Grade:

SP20-013

Compensation Range:

$215,038.00-279,548.00 USD

The Physical Demand Level for this job is: S – Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally (Occasionally: activity or condition exists up to 1/3 of the time) and/or a negligible amount of force frequently. (Frequently: activity or condition exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
