Akima Electronics Technician III (HWAS MESONET) in Colorado Springs, Colorado
Akima Systems Engineering (ASE), is looking for an Electronics Technician III to maintain the High Wind Alert System (HWAS) at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. The HWAS MESONET is comprised of a network of 12 weather monitoring stations designed to provide high-quality environmental and meteorological data in real time. These weather stations have multiple sensors, solar/battery power, radio communications and a Loggernet website that provides vital data for the USAFA Weather Team for weather forecasting, aviation support, emergency planning, and USAFA events. The HWAS technician will be responsible for the installation, testing, troubleshooting, calibration and planned maintenance of all MESONET components and the HWAS website. The weather stations are mounted on various structures around USAFA, Colorado Springs and Rampart Range. Towers are up to 100 feet tall and require climbing to access sensors.
Responsibilities
Install new weather stations and instrumentation and calibrate the equipment as needed
Perform weather station instrumentation and field maintenance to ensure data continuity
Diagnose equipment issues and perform repairs and servicing
Keep accurate data of work performed and required maintenance
Engage with landowners and clients to maintain and foster relationships
Wire and/or program dataloggers and sensors
Maintain the HWAS Loggernet website
Qualifications
Formal technical training in Engineering, Electronics or other appropriate technical field plus 3 years of environmental monitoring equipment or related experience. Equivalent education/experience considered.
Experience must demonstrate effective communication skills and ability to operate MS Office suite.
Ability to lift and carry 50+ pounds on a regular basis and climb ladders.
Must be tower climber certified.
Experience safely operating hand/power tools.
Valid driver’s license
Must be able to pass background checks for access to USAFA.
Ability to respond to and assess HWAS failures within 24 hours.
Desired Qualifications:
Experience working outside in varying and extreme weather conditions.
Experience working unsupervised on projects in remote locations.
Demonstrated ability to learn new technical skills (e.g., wiring electronics, programming dataloggers, and performing data quality checks)
OSHA 10 or 30
Rigging
CPR
Certified Climber/Rescue
Additional transferable certifications from previous roles are a plus.
Physical Demands
Job requirements include the ability to work outside, operate power and hand tools safely, and lift 50+ pounds on a regular basis. Attention to detail and quality of work performed, along with the ability to respond to system errors within 24 hours, is also required.
