This role is accountable for supporting a robust and dynamic credit portfolio management framework for the enterprise. A fundamental understanding of credit risk, the bank’s lending practices (including underwriting), credit structuring and an overall understanding of the lending business in both the Canadian and US markets is critical for this role. This role also requires the ability to understand the highly quantitative aspect of many risk disciplines and to bring the business perspective forward to the quantitative discipline. Working closing with both quantitative as well as business colleagues, the ability to communicate on both a technical/quantitative and business basis is important for success. In addition to management of various credit concentration limits, this role includes management and reporting of the limit framework, active portfolio management and offlay of credit risks (both single name and industry/product concentrations), assessment of the risk return of key concentrations and recommendation of capital deployment, reporting and assessment of key concentrations which are presented at various risk committees including RMC/RRC, fundamental understanding of credit methodologies including risk rating models and key risk drivers such as PD/LGD/EAD and the stress testing of key concentrations under various business strategies to determine reasonableness under stress against the bank’s overall risk appetite. This role is accountable to work with and liaise with senior business leaders, economics, senior risk leaders (including the CRO), finance colleagues, economic & regulatory capital methodology teams, stress testing, transactional credit teams (including the SCO(s)), enterprise risk policy and governance teams as well as the risk reporting teams to achieve objectives in enhancement of the credit portfolio management discipline. In addition, this role will be responsible for ongoing changes in market & regulatory environment and provide assessment and forward looking views of the portfolio that require analysis on a more adhoc basis. As a central function, this role is instrumental in ensuring a holistic overview of the credit risk portfolio of the bank. However critical to this role is the ability to work with various LOB portfolio functions.
Industry/Product & Limits
Support oversight & operation of the wholesale credit limit framework including operating procedures & automation of limit reporting;
Regular reporting and oversight on the overall wholesale lending book as well as key concentrations
Industry Reviews and Deep Dives
Take lead and/or support role, as required on board level risk/LOB presentations for key credit risk concentration; ensuring all key stakeholders are engaged with respect to various industry/product reviews at appropriate times as well as the key risk factors are addressed
Provide effective challenge to the business strategy presented by each LOB
Portfolio Insights
Development of a standardized view of the portfolio to provide deeper insights into risk trends in key sectors, geographies or LOBs
Strong understanding of various market indicators and the various insights to the overall wholesale loan book (CDS market trending; indices and top names, various market indices showing sectoral movement
Develop a framework that takes key industry indices and comparison against key risk or loss metrics to provide forward looking insights
Understanding of the key economic drivers for key concentrations with the ability to track key economic variables or industries against our book and current performance
Provide insights on industry or product basis of both negative and positive trends in industry (Enterprise wide and Canada/US)
Key understanding of Risk Migration trending and its applicability to portfolio insights including change in underwriting standards, as well as trending against key risk drivers for specific industry/product concentrations
Risk Transfer
Fundamental understanding of various risk transfer options, both at a single name and concentration perspective including best practices in the industry with respect to credit portfolio management
CPM expert on risk transfer initiatives in the institution and the impact, if any, to credit risk concentration limits
Maintain engagement with Capital solution, treasury and capital management to ensure understanding of pipeline of transactions
Continued monitoring tall trees – both single name and industry wide for potential risk transfer opportunities
Engage with LOB, transactional credit and I&CB with respect to development of CLO and other warehouse structures to effectively transfer credit risk
Risk Return
- Key risk representative and liaison between finance, risk reporting and CPM to develop a consistent risk return metric for analysis across products, industries and LOBs
Stress Testing
Key understanding of the credit stress testing process and models.
Key stakeholder with respect to wholesale credit stress testing and CPM’s key responsibilities include engaging with credit stress testing team
Knowledge :
7+ years of relevant banking experience; preference to have minimum of 5 years corporate banking or relevant capital markets experience with focus on credit risk
Professional designation or graduate degree, such as MBA, Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), or accounting designation,
In depth knowledge of BMO Risk Management approach and overall knowledge of BMO;
Solid knowledge of BMO Risk Policies and Processes; including solid knowledge of credit risk policy and overall lending practices
Understanding of multi-jurisdictional legal / regulatory environment
Awareness of financial and business marketplace and risk issues affecting various industries, with particular focus on proactive management of current and future potential issues impacting on the businesses
Experience working in close partnership with stakeholders at various levels in a way that maximises their participation and leverages their support
Skills :
Expert oral / written communication skills
Strong attention to detail with a proven decision making ability
Highly developed personal effectiveness skills, which include the ability to influence and negotiate, adapt to varying conditions and apply creativity and seize personal development opportunities
Ability to use both excel and powerpoint is critical
Ability to interface effectively with Senior Executives of BMO and ability to work in cross disciplinary teams is critical
Ability to lead cross disciplinary teams to achieve a goal
Ability to think creatively and ‘outside the box’; able to advance new concepts and ideas and work effectively in “white space”
Salary:
$100,000.00 - $185,500.00

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
