General Summary:

The Assistant Controller is a member of the leadership team of Corporate Finance whose primary role is to provide operational leadership and financial management expertise to manage corporate reporting and accounting functions by overseeing the completion of various financial reports, guiding team operations, collaborating with key stakeholders and developing initiatives for continuous process improvements to ensure alignment with department standards and company objectives.

The Assistant Controller reports directly to the AVP of Finance, System Corporate Controller and will lead the day-to-day accounting operations including functional oversight of the month-end financial close, financial audits and regulatory reporting requirements. This role is also responsible for ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of the financial statements of Rush University Medical Center and its various affiliates in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) as well as the oversight of those areas/processes contributing to the accuracy of the financial statements as evidenced by the results of the annual audit process. Direct oversight of areas includes General Accounting (includes Project Accounting and Fund Accounting), External Billing, Payroll, and Accounts Payable.

The Assistant Controller is responsible for implementing, documenting and maintaining effective processes to improve the financial close and ensure that controls are in place for accurate reporting of results. This position will contribute towards driving change and efficiency within the Corporate Finance teams.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage and provide support on the daily operations of areas of oversight with a focus on cultivating a positive and inclusive team culture while driving process efficiency

  • Lead and manage the monthly accounting close process ensuring all transactions incurred are properly recorded and ensures timeliness, accuracy and completeness and are in accordance with GAAP

  • Manage preparation of the internal financial statements, prepare timely and relevant financial analysis, and provide financial reporting support for the AVP of Finance, System Corporate Controller

  • Review and ensure follow-up on account reconciliation of balance sheet accounts and develop processes to capture and correct transactions that do not process properly in a timely fashion

  • Review and maintain the general ledger chart of accounts

  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives and develop internal controls by observing effectiveness of accounting and reporting processes, identifying issues, recommending solutions and providing leadership team with feedback to support efficiency and accuracy of accounting and reporting operations and ensure team alignment with business goals

  • Participates in the development and implementation of the strategic plan for the hospital and corporate finance, aligned with the strategic plan for the Rush System for Health

  • Acts as a change agent and manages organizational change efforts to ensure operational effectiveness

  • Provide supervision and mentoring for the staff members of areas of oversight

Skills:

  • Strong technical accounting skills with proficiency in GAAP.

  • Communication skills are required in order to lead, inform and educate effectively.

  • Advanced information systems and computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) are required.

  • Interpersonal savvy – interact effectively with internal and external customers and builds constructive and effective relationships

  • Continuous improvement mindset to elevate Corporate Finance to become a Center of Excellence

Requirements:

  • A minimum of ten years of hospital/healthcare finance and accounting experience required.

  • A minimum of five years of management experience required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance/Business required

  • CPA/MBA preferred or equivalent relevant experience

  • Public Accounting experience highly desired.
