University of Virginia One Small Step Project Manage/Field Organizer, The Democracy Initiative in Charlottesville, Virginia
The Democracy Initiative seeks applicants for a one-year Project Manager/Field Organizer for the One Small Step Project (OSS). The One Small Step Project fosters conversations between people who hold different worldviews with the goal to recognize our shared humanity, and to tackle increasing political polarization. The incumbent will lead a partnership between UVA and StoryCorps/One Small Step, as well as to manage other shorter-term projects.
The Project Manager/Field Organizer will organize and implement activities that support the development of a UVA/City of Charlottesville/Albemarle County project that creates and supports media and community partnerships to help them work synergistically to maximize visibility for and spread the One Small Step ethos throughout their community.
This position operates with considerable autonomy and reports to the Democracy Initiative chief of staff and is expected to work collaboratively with the Democracy Initiative team, as well as the StoryCorps/One Small Step national team. The project manager will work to closely align with the project budget.
Identify and build partnerships in Charlottesville and Albemarle County in collaboration with UVA partners.
Assume primary responsibility for supporting partners to implement OSS with their constituents.
Determine planning and activities that will enable partners to recruit and enroll participants in a local drive to record interviews, including providing training, content, and promotional support that helps local partners engage diverse segment of their constituencies.
Support partners in their efforts to record and preserve OSS interviews.
Support partners to create edited audio segments, including disseminating production tools and training materials tailored to partners’ capacity, and needs.
Support the preparation of reports (narrative, qualitative, and quantitative) for internal organizational use.
Develop and implement a planning process to help partners continue One Small Step beyond their year-long formal engagement with StoryCorps.
Perform other duties to support the One Small Step Initiative and OSS partnerships, as assigned.
Supervise and manage two to three UVA part-time graduate assistants as project facilitators.
Manage other short-term projects as time allows.
Bachelor’s degree or a similar combination of relevant education and experience.
At least two year’s experience managing collaborative programs, preferably in a nonprofit environment.
Demonstrated experience in developing and executing outreach plans.
Experience in planning and overseeing complex project execution.
Must be comfortable and move seamlessly between varied political, social, and organizational environments in local communities.
Should be a creative & analytical thinker with a drive for results and a demonstrated track record of creating and implementing new initiatives.
Able to communicate effectively – by email, phone or in person.
Must be organized, with a keen attention to detail, and the ability to multitask effectively.
Must have strong computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word & Excel).
Able to work independently as well as collaboratively, a great team player.
Comfortable delivering presentations and trainings to audiences of varying sizes and backgrounds.
Fluency in a language other than English; Spanish highly preferred.
Audio production experience (radio or podcast).
Social and digital media skills and experience.
The anticipated hiring range for this position $58K to $65K commensurate with qualifications and experience.
This is an exempt level, benefited position. This position is a restricted one-year position.
