Equitable is looking for an Underwriting Director to support the Employee Benefits team. This role will lead a regional pre-sale underwriting team of 8 to 12 members that provide case level underwriting and pricing for Group Life, AD&D, LTD, STD, Dental, Vision, and Supplemental Health products.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains deep relationships with Distribution partners.

  • Establishes and maintains underwriter authority levels for each product.

  • Monitors pricing and profitability by product and market segment and initiate corrective action as needed.

  • Researches market best practices and benchmarks benefit offerings to measure and ensure competitiveness of employee benefits products and services.

  • Contributes to the development and/or refinement of group products and contracts to meet market needs and company objectives.

  • Provides proactive cross-functional guidance and support during the pre-sale process

  • Ensures compliance with state and federal insurance regulations.

  • Manages the team responsible for analyses of new business RFP process

  • Manages and develops staff members to working on appropriate cases of various sizes and complexity.

  • Guides underwriters with pricing and plan changes and responds to broker and customer inquiries.

  • Works with UW Policy and Procedures head to perform audits and facilitate training.

  • Provides guidance when setting UW SLAs and hold team accountable to performance goals

  • Provides consultative services to sales producers, brokers, and/or customers regarding group insurance plans.

  • Participates in project work and with other teams to develop or improve underwriting processes.

  • Serves as an IT liaison, and SME for the Company’s quoting and proposal system

  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

The base salary range for this position is $105,000 - $156,000. Actual base salaries vary based on skills, experience, and geographical location. In addition to base pay, Equitable provides compensation to reward performance with base salary increases, spot bonuses, and short-term incentive compensation opportunities. Eligibility for these programs depends on level and functional area of responsibility.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent professional work experience

  • 10 years of employee benefits or group benefits underwriting experience

  • 2 years of experience in a people leadership

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fellow, Life Management Institute (FMLI) designation

  • Group Benefits Disability Specialist (GBDS)

  • Deep expertise related to Dental and/or Supplemental Health underwriting

  • In depth knowledge of Group life and disability insurance markets, risks, and related costs

  • In depth knowledge of alternate funding methodology, with the ability to create, present and articulate understandable illustrations and models that support and explain complex funding mechanisms

  • Ability to effectively manage across cross-functional teams

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines

  • High level of adaptability and capability working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

  • In depth technical knowledge to direct strategic financial matters at a corporate level

  • Familiarity with U.S. domestic non-medical employee benefits products

  • Exposure to Salesforce from a reporting perspective is a plus

Knowledge of Reinsurance: Knowledge of reinsurance activities, processes, tools, and considerations; ability to implement all reinsurance practices following all standards, applicable laws and regulations.

Knowledge of Underwriting: Knowledge of the full spectrum of underwriting activities, practices, tools and considerations; ability to utilize underwriting knowledge to implement, manage and improve the underwriting process.

Managing Multiple Priorities: Knowledge of effective self-management practices; ability to manage multiple concurrent objectives, projects, groups, or activities, making effective judgments as to prioritizing and time allocation.

Pricing: Knowledge of the full spectrum of insurance pricing activities, practices, tools and considerations; ability to utilize various techniques to set prices for premiums of different insurance products and contracts.

Staff and Career Development: Knowledge of available internal and external learning resources and ability to address learning, training, and career development needs of individuals, teams or organization.
