Carlisle Companies, Inc. Maintenance Mechanic in Carlisle, Pennsylvania

Carlisle Weatherproofing Technologies (CWT) is a leading building envelope solution supplier that effectively drives energy efficiency and sustainability in commercial and residential applications. We are seeking an Maintenance Mechanic in our Carlisle, PA Plant.

Shift: 11:00pm - 7:00 am

Starting Pay: $37.95 plus $1.50 shift differential

Job Summary

Plan, layout, perform and oversee work assignments involving machining, welding, basic electricity, pipefitting, carpentry, masonry, plumbing, etc. Install, erect, assemble, level and align all machinery and plant or office equipment. Provide effective service, maintenance, and repair to all machines, equipment, and facilities. Work with sheet metal, structural steel, wood, hydraulics, pneumatics, sewage systems, and a broad range of mechanical devices. Work to close fits and tolerances. Knowledge of operating principles of all facilities on the Carlisle Campus is required to provide judgments, planning, and quick response to ensure equipment functions properly and safely.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Planning and executing jobs handed down from maintenance support staff or engineering team.

  • Selecting parts from storage and/or catalog.

  • Mow the lawn using tractor/push mower

  • Plow snow using tractor/plow truck

  • Install, erect, move, maintain, service and repair all plant and office equipment and facilities

  • Make sketches of repair parts for fabrication

  • Operate shop equipment (drill press, lathe, grinder, belt sander, mill, etc).

  • Repair and maintain basic electrical components (under 500 VAC).

  • Calibrate scales and equipment

  • Repair forklifts

  • Tend the boiler room equipment

  • Operate within close fits and tolerances

  • Follow maintenance manuals, service manuals, specifications, blue prints, sketches, etc.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Preferred Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of machine operating principles and mechanical aptitude to provide equipment troubleshooting to all operations.

  • A general understanding of plant processes and familiarity with equipment operations for Plant 4, Plant 5, Plant 6 and CCW.

  • Knowledge of the operation of machine shop equipment and safety systems.

  • Interpretation of blueprints, mechanical and electrical schematics and piping diagrams.

  • Preferred Skills:

  • Reading - read maintenance manuals, service manuals, parts catalogs, nameplate information, work orders, PM schedules, MSDS, etc.

  • Math - keep counts, tallies, measure required parts dimensions, setup machine tools to close tolerances, calculate amperage, wattage, geometry, trigonometry, etc.

  • Writing - compete work orders, PM worksheets, record parts used, etc.

  • Interpretation of blueprints, mechanical and electrical schematics, and piping diagrams.

  • Drawing of sketches and diagrams.

  • Communication skills - receiving and giving job instructions, participating in team problem solving groups, receive information and resolve machine operation problems with machine operators.

  • Construction, painting, carpentry, welding, machining, pipe fitting, masonry, plumbing, etc.

  • Shop power equipment operation.

  • Hand tool operation.

  • Operation and interpretation of measuring devices (amp meter, micrometer, dial indicators, temperature and pressure gauges, etc.).

  • Self-Directing - Able to work towards specific goals and objectives with limited oversight

  • Familiarization with safety rules and procedures in Plant 4, Plant 5, Plant 6 and the CCW and all other facilities on the Carlisle Campus.

Education and Experience:

  • Education:

High School Diploma or GED, Completion of an accredited apprentice program or technical school program or college degree in the mechanical field.

Equivalency: N/A

Continuing Education:

All classifications of Mechanics will be required to attend, participate and complete continuing education, including seminars & training sessions both in and out of the plant as directed and planned by their Shift Crew leader or Maintenance Supervisor.

  • Experience:

Mechanic Apprentice/New Graduate: 0 to 4 years of experience as a Mechanic. Industrial/manufacturing experience preferred.

Mechanic Grade 4MA-3MA: Four or more years of experience as a Mechanic. Industrial/manufacturing experience preferred.

Working Conditions:

Activities occur inside and outside of Plant 4, Plant 5, Plant 6, CCW/Shiffer Building, Shiffer Annex, Administration Building and Technical Center, Training & Education Center and Research & Innovation Building.

Job conditions include but are not limited to exposure to the following:

  • Potential for temperatures exceeding 120°F when working near ceiling, in curing vessels or process tanks, or in boiler rooms.

  • Work in high places (20' ceilings, 80' to top storage silos).

  • Potential for temperatures below 32 degrees F when working outside during the winter.

  • Fumes from cleaning solutions.

  • Fumes from manufacturing processes.

  • Airborne dust.

  • Use of chemicals, contact cleaners, spray solvent, RTV, carbon black, etc.

  • Hydraulic and lubricating oils.

  • Moving mechanical parts including conveyors, production machinery, shop equipment and possible pinch points.

  • Confined spaces including tanks, curing vessels, under equipment, mixer bodies etc.

  • Heavy equipment operation including forklift, hoist, bridge crane, tractor, etc.

  • Hearing protection is required in specified areas of plants.

  • Respirators are required in specified areas of plants.

  • Complete projects within a deadline and promptly respond to equipment breakdowns.

  • Exposure to the chemicals used to manufacture our adhesive products. These included but are not limited to toluene, heptane, xylene, oxsol, MEK, 90 Solvent, tert butyl acetate, VMP naptha, acetone, etc.

  • Working in Class 1 Division 1 and Class 1 Division 2 and Class 2 Division 2 hazardous environments.

  • Exposure to chemicals used in the CCW manufacturing process.
